plugged it in and I'm happy to report at 3k RPM I was getting 13.8 volts...nice and steady!

Got the 292 regulator from Advanced Autoparts. it is BWD brand, but should work, right? pic of the regulator here... https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/NdUfWzGfjH9R2TxxA29w-g?feat=directlink

charging system. voltage all over the place

just thought I'd give an update. went back to curly's test.... 1. failed magnetic field test 2. jumper line from + on battery to hot brush = 18 volts at the battery (rpm's where high since I had started cold and had the choke on). so, I'm off to buy a replacement regulator. fingers...

charging system. voltage all over the place

XSLeo, if you are still seeing this. Your first advice was right-on! Try a different voltage meter! brought a really good one home from work...11.8 at idle. Damn it! Back to Curly's list.

charging system. voltage all over the place

I never use the starter, always kick but for some reason I hit the starter button today. Nothing happened. So I disconnected the starter from the relay and now she is changing normally! A happy discovery!

charging system. voltage all over the place

finally coming back to this....new baby and frustration have kept me away. Spent sometime looking for a bad ground today without luck. What seems weird is that I got 12.2V on the battery with everything off. started it up with the safety relay disconnected and the voltage was all over the place...

charging system. voltage all over the place

Hi guys, I have been on here before about my '78 xs. Had a charging issue which I thought I had solved but recently after a long ride the brand new battery was drained. Recharged the battery and tested after a few days. It is holding a charge nicely. Started the bike and tested the voltage at...

    regulator blowing main fuse

took me forever, but I have the charging issue resolved! Thanks to all of you! I did the radio shack rectifier, jeep regulator, and I replaced the rotor and stator. The safety relay wasn't an issue...once I got the charging system right that worked fine. Just got back from a ride and everything...

    regulator blowing main fuse

thanks guys. yes, pete. I think I may have shorted the brushes but didn't realize it til I went to start the bike. Engine didn't want to turn...the stator wasn't seated properly. I did hit the electric start while trying to figure out why the motor didn't want to turn which is probably why the...

That is the same unit as the starter relay, right? I always kick (bendix still needs replaced) it so, I wouldn't have even noticed if it went.

saw that on craigslist...I was tempted, but didn't have the cash. Good luck and post some photos along the way

    regulator blowing main fuse

oh, one other odd thing. my headlight and dash lights always (for years) came on as soon as the bike was running, now the lights "on-off" switch actually works. weird!

    regulator blowing main fuse

just wanted to check back in with SOME progress...replaced the regulator with 292 solid state. Started up the bike and the voltage is really hard to ready. It is jumping from 12-13.4 or so at idle. It actually is a bit lower when I rev the engine. So, it seems my problems are not over. Radio...

that is what I have been using, but gotta admit the rectifier tests were beyond me.

    regulator blowing main fuse

thanks pumps - yea, was just thinking the mikesxs would cover the regulator too. hell, at that point almost the whole system would be new (minus the stator). is there a quick test for the regulator? I'm gonna replace the stator connector and see if I'm still blowing fuses.
