TwoManyXS1Bs,
Of course now that I have completely taken everything around the battery box out to check electrical wiring...my bikes runs. Of course. I think you may be onto something regarding fuel as I have had fuel issues in the past.
Let's talk voltage first- not running I'm at 12.48...
Ok, So I put on the new rotor, new brushes and buttoned everthing up. Started up the bike and it ran fine...for a couple minutes. Then it did it's usual...once warmed up it died again. Now it won't even run anymore. So, in short I can't check the battery voltage because i can't even get it...
Just wanted to let you know that the brush touching the outer ringlet was 12mm long and the brush touching the inner ringlet (earth or ground I believe) is 7 mm long. I have heard that at 7mm it is time to replace the brush.
Also, will replacing the brushes and rotor fix the problem? Can I test...
Hey Everyone,
Thanks for your input. I haven't had a chance to review everything yet but I have no doubt there is info on this site. A couple questions for when I go through the wiring.
Should I consider replacing these bullet style plugs with more contemporary connectors? Home Depot and...
TooManyXS1Bs, Peanut and Gordon,
Thanks for all your help. This site is great! My uncle has been a car mechanic for 50 years or so and knows a few shops that can do a rewind, I'm not sure if they do motorcycle rotor rewinds but what's the difference? Either way I'm going to need to buy the...
nj1639 & Gordon,
Lets start slow. I could tell you how to do a US Customs and Border Protection entry with screen shots of what it looks like and instructions to key this and key that and then your done but it's not the same. Here is what I was able to do. I'm going to get into more this...
Hi Everyone,
It's been a while since I've been on here, good to be back. Got my 1980 XS 650 SG up and running. Ended up going to a shop because I couldn't get it running. Here is what I know:
The Carbs are perfect and synched, timing is good and valves are good. The bike is only charging...
Hey Group,
Ok so here is the deal, as those of you who have been with me know this has been a work in progress. Got the bike up and running pretty good. Left the petcock in the prime position once and it wouldn't start. Don't know what happened but I basically keep cranking the engine over and...
Leo,
Went through one cycle of what you have described above. Compression is now running around 158 LBS on the Right Side and 156 LBS on the Left side with a warm bike and throttle all the way open.
I am willing to take care of the Cam Chain guide issue and do a new cam chain as...
You all are putting me to shame here. You are totally right. The Front Cam Chain Guide comes off in little black pieces. Duh, that is what it has to be then. Totally makes sense. Now I just have to decide if I want to do the front cam chain guide or both the front cam chain guide and back...
Finally took a closer look at this material and it's not magnetic so it is likely plastic. Now the question is: how many cam chain guides are there 1 or 2 and would you replace both of them or only the one on the exhaust side of the engine?
Thanks again guys. I'm learning that it's kind of hard to mess these bikes up and they need love just like everything else. In terms of cleaning the filters what are you using? I have been using carb/choke cleaner and brake clean if its really thick with gunk. For the carb parts I went over to a...
LittleBill thanks for the extremely helpful valve adjustment video...helped sooooooo much and I think you are right here
Ok, spent some more time exploring this bike and I think I finally have proof of the problem.
Did a new compression test with the throttle open this time:
1) Left Cylinder...
