Yeah serious PITA. I ended up using on of the shipping caps off a new tach drive cable and adapting it to my vacuum bleeder. It wasn't any less messy but, it was much more productive at getting the job done.

I am work so I will double check when I get home, but not rust...didn't seem to leak when I was test riding. I am sure it is some form of fuel seepage though.
