Stupid question but is the right side points for the right side cyinder sitting on the bike or standing in front of it?

Thanks guys for the advice I'm going to try again today to get it fired up.

Put in a new points too. Is the part with the raised ridge go to the front or back? I also forgot to mention. I had it running for about 20sec. till it shut off by itself. The coils were real hot so thats why I ended up putting everything new I thought the coils messed up.

I can't seem to get it right. I adjust the right hand side first at the widest point on the cam to .012,but when I put a light tester across the points to adjust the points plate after I have the right side on the compression stroke and rotate the plate couterclockwise so the light will turn off...

Turns out it was the cam bushings. Already on order from mikesxs. Thanks for all the info guys. There's way better info on this site than the manual.

Is there supposed to be play in the rod cam assembly? I can move it with my fingers up and down and side to side on the points side. I think it has play on the other side too.

I'm trying to reset the points on a 79 xs650f and can't seem to get it right. The manual says that you have to set the right side first to the right side of the engine. So I set that one first the set the other side. After I rotate the engine to check if they are opening and closing,but it looks...

Thanks I thought that was it. Just wanted to make sure. The previous owner must have put it on. I'm running points on it for now till I get more money so I'm going to just cap them off for now.

I'm not sure what this is. I think its the pickup but not sure. Its on the outer cover of the generator cover. It has 3 wires one orange one black and one grey. Please help.. Thanks in advance.
