Have you put a volt meter on the battery to see that your charging system is actually working? The safety relay gets activated by the yellow wire coming from the stator.

Are you getting your components mixed up? The starter solenoid has two heavy cables, one from the battery and the other going to the starter along with a red/white positive wire and a blue/white from the starter button.
It looks like the post '81 bikes got the side stand safety switch. The second black/white wire wire looks like it went to the relay for that switch. The other B/w wire goes to the pickup coil which you need. By the way the standard punishment for starting a new thread is be-heading! Lol

According to Progressive's site it doesn't matter, but they say some manuals state to install with the tight wound portion towards the bottom for less spring noise.
