A dip or slight hesitation in power

Thank you for your pictures, write up and help, 5twins! Explains a lot for me. ">>You say the bike is a '78, but that doesn't necessarily mean the carb set is.<<" You are correct, 5twins. The carbs on my XS is the upper one so I do have the 76-77 38mm carbs. The 4M1 would then be OK I...

A dip or slight hesitation in power

Dear Friends of the Board. Is it normal for these old bikes to have a slight hesitation in power / acceleration from 2.500 to 3.000 rpm ? Mine does so, it has more or less the same pull from idle ( 1.200 ) to around 3.000 and then it´s a bit like it "comes on the cam" and accelerates with more...

    Speedometer drive unit gone south..

Dear friends of the Forum. Where would I be able to obtain a speedometer drive unit for my XS 650 1977 model ? I have searched the internet and come up with nothing. Nothing on Mike´s XS ( which I find is getting more and more expensive) My original one is seized and I cannot find a way to...

Shoots out carb, unstable idle - I have tried everything.

I have been dealing with a very similar problem in my XS and I found the solution in my case; I had done everything I (and my friends) could think of; Cleaned out the 38 mm carbs thoroughly and set the float height. I went through the whole stock ignition replacing one item at a time. Set the...

    HOW TO: Drill mag wheels

I know for some that these holes look nice, but it would be nice to know how much a weight loss this is, asa weight loss for the rims would lessen the gyroscopic weight of the bike and make the bike feel and handle better. Any weight numbers ? Regards, Heimir Bardason

    a shocking shock.

Dear suspension experts! I know that I should not be thinking about suspension performance on these old bikes, but I must say that the standard shocks on my 1978 XS are not a stellar design.the bike is all over the place when going over small bumps. I am looking for shocks which have...

    Cam chain tensioner intense......

I have now installed a plastic damper in my chain tensioner as suggested, fired her up and adjusted the tensioner to the point where it completely eliminated the rattling chain noise. Thanks for the input, friends. Case closed. Heimir Bardason

    Cam chain tensioner intense......

So everything is not as it seems, CTNTX650?? The cooper washer is not pictured in the parts manual for this model. But hell, if it cuts down on my metallic noise, what the hell.... Or you can buy an hydraulic tensioner from Germany. Heimir Bardason

    Cam chain tensioner intense......

Thank you again boys (and girls) 5twins; Thanks for the picture! My cam chain tensioner does not have the copper washer. I will get me one, insert it, adjust for no noise and run it as jayel points out. My puny mind is at ease..... Best, Heimir Bardason.

    Cam chain tensioner intense......

Thanks for the response, XS friends. Yes I am in Reykjavik, inxs. I have already removed the sump plate and it´s clean as a baby´s arse..... I take the 19.mm plug off, start the engine and look at the end of the pin which bobs in/out around 1 mm (give or take) I am just wondering that if I...

    Cam chain tensioner intense......

Dear Sirs. I have been an owner of an XS 650 E (standard) for 2 years now. There is one thing that is puzzling me; When I adjust the cam chain tensioner as said by owners manual and Clymer (pin should me flush with the nut) I have a lot of mecanical noise, assumingly coming from the cam...
