Wrist pin play - video

Yes, that is exactly how it sounded. I described it elsewhere as 'irregular' and unlike valve rattle, because I couldn't quite figure out the relationship between rpm and rattle. But now I've compared the wrist pin in another con rod I can see how it is supposed to fit. I also measured the ID of...

    Wrist pin play - video

Thanks for the input. I've checked the tolerances and found that the pin itself is ok. But the small end seems to be too worn, explaining the excessive axial play. I have a spare parts engine and a comparison between the two small ends and pins supports this hypothesis. So I think this...

    Wrist pin play - video

You're quite right 650Skull. I missed that in the manual. Anyway, the crank bearings are within tolerances. I was asking about 'axial' play and there is 1mm which is near the low/new end in fact! Phew. For the small end the manual just says to check the gudgeon pin for for excessive wear...

    Wrist pin play - video

And a couple of photos of the small end itself. Looks pretty good to me. There is some wear but nothing abnormal looking (to my untrained eye at least): [/IMG] [/IMG]

    Wrist pin play - video

Actually the big end has some 'twisting' play too (sorry, don't know the correct term - not side to side along the crank but tilting it left and right). Another youtube link because I can't figure out how to embed it :-/ What do you make of this: Update: I measured the play and...

    Wrist pin play - video

As I've been going on about in another thread I'm trying to find the source of a strange engine rattle (there are lots of those threads on here! ha ha). I've pulled the jugs and the pistons look fine. They say '25' on the top which I think means first oversize so the PO must have replaced them...

    Rattle, cam chain? Suggestions please

Thanks guys. I added one of those metal/rubber tensioner dampers a while back but it made no difference. To remove the cam I removed the bearings and slipped the cam out from the chain. It was tight so I'm becoming more convinced that the chain has been replaced already and is fine. The...

    Rattle, cam chain? Suggestions please

I don't think I'm being overly cautious. It's an extra noise, additional the normal running chatter and it's somewhat irregular, like something rattling about. Not a constant ticking/tapping. High pitched, like a pinging almost. A bit like a ball bearing bouncing about in the engine. I'm using...

    Rattle, cam chain? Suggestions please

Actually I should add that the rattle is somewhat irregular, so I don't think it's a valve thing, but I'm not sure that my logic is sound on that. I know these engines aren't silent by any means but it just doesn't sound right.

    Rattle, cam chain? Suggestions please

My '78 XS650 has a rattle that sounds like valves but they are adjusted correctly. I've checked the cam chain tension and it seems to make no difference. The rattle is louder when the engine is hot, maybe just because the oil is thinner. It's most noticeable when the engine is not under load. I...
