Thanks once again 2M and Pete. Well it lives. Satisfied the kickstart is working good enough (sometimes it rotates a few times before it grips and even then it's near the bottom of the stroke when it does grip) to try it after a few kicks there was a promising cough, then a couple more and then...

One other thing, I made a panel for the flasher indicators and an oil pressure light but i cant work out where the sender for an oil pressure switch would go.

Well the shims arrived and after studying the diagram I decided to just install one extra after the circlip. I also used the circlip that came with the shims as it was in better condition than mine. Put the cover back on ,tightened it up and at this point I should have checked the kick start...

Agreed 2M,I wasn't actually going to modify anything but both of my workshop manuals a pretty vague when it comes to the kickstart. The information you've posted is the most useful I've seen and yeah, when those shims arrive I'll be comparing them to the measurements you provided.

That's awesome thanks 2M. I definitely have the 26 tooth kickstart gear. The idea of a shim after the circlip makes sense as the kickstart shaft was moving in and out .10" ( just over 2.5 mm). What about that gap between the existing washer and the circlip, Should that gap be shimmed? And if I...

Wow, get busy at work and a month slips by just like that. So , still chasing the kickstart problem. The first photo shows the order I assembled the mechanism, shim, washer, collar, shim, circlip. The second photo shows the gap between the circlip and the shim which makes me think I need another...

Dumb question ... do I need to apply wax to the buffing wheel on my bench grinder?

Yep but I can remember when I only had one buffing wheel, wasn't sure wether to put the buffing compound on the wheel or the part and just wanted to "Get some of that ol' dirt off and make it look decent". And if I weren't so technologically impaired I'd put some smiley faces here.

Dumb question ... do I need to apply wax to the buffing wheel on my bench grinder?

Reading this thread I've learned a lot I didn't know. One thing I will add though is with my kit I use different wheels for different compounds . There is a specific wheel for red ,grey white etc. Also those grinders are mounted to boards so I just put the board in a vice when I want to use them'
