    The $100 basket case

Wow, 5twins!! I was looking into this on another build as I thought the springs were way too soft. Do you have a link or anything on how the spacers were constructed?

    The $100 basket case

I was sitting on my little chair and noticed it. It's way off and factory welded. The tube is cut at the wrong angle. It's got spiders in it too, lol. Must have been a Monday. ...

    The $100 basket case

Got the forks disassembled and now cleaned. Fork oil actually looked good. ....

    The $100 basket case

I checked it out. Its fine. Not the first yard bike I’ve owned. I always check the bottom of the frames for splits and bottoming out marks. Probably more solid than most of the bubblegum weld jobs I’ve seen on other’s bikes anyway. I guess at least I know there was water in there and can check...

    Rotor puller stripped

No matter what you do, be extemely careful as the rotor is indexed on the crank by a woodruff key. Open up the keyway too much and you’ll need a new crank or have to do some machine work. ...

    Rotor puller stripped

You did remove the 17mm nut on the crank shaft before putting on the puller, correct? I ask because I saw someone jam a puller on there and it got all jammed up. You may need to use a dremel, VERY carefully to cut the puller off of the rotor. ...

Reasonable asking price for a 81 XS650 bobber project?

As for price.. In my area, and this is for my area only as I don't follow every deal in the world, if the bike doesn't run and is as pictured, maybe $600 with a title. Running would be around $1,000 -$1,200, more if it was ridable. The market where I live is flooded with hardtails. Lots to...

Reasonable asking price for a 81 XS650 bobber project?

140 to 150 is where you want it. However, it's best to do this after the bike has warmed up. You want the rings to set themselves in the cylinder. Here's a link to an older thread, should help http://www.xs650.com/threads/proper-procedure-for-a-compression-test.1131/ ...

    The $100 basket case

The neck. The whole down tube was full of water. Someone made a small hole in the top of the right down tube, for whatever reason, and it must have filled with water over time. The bike sat outside for a long time ....

    The $100 basket case

I laid the frame on it's side and about 1L of water poured out. Weight saving.

    Gremlins

Your starter button and kill switch are housed together. Take it apart and clean it. Most likely your kill switch is not secure and shutting off the coils.

    The $100 basket case

It doesn’t look too bad. Typical stuff wrong with it like the cam chain follower, but I plan to rebuild it. .....

    The $100 basket case

Here she is boys and girls. The $100 basket case. ‘81 with 13K on the clock Looks like it sat outside on the side stand for quite a while, but its complete and after getting the engine back together, a good TCI, and a carb clean it fired right up. And now its torn down and ready to be...
