For what it's worth, I solved all my charging/ battery issues by going to the Permanent Magnet Alternator kit from XS650 Direct. Installation was a pretty simple affair and the result was trouble free charging -running ever since.

Have tried that...does not seem to work on my 1977....jumpered out the safety relay...which worked for a little while...it's all very weird. Put everything back to the way it was ...no headlight...everything else is working perfectly...and yes the headlight bulb is good...anyone got any...

Thanks for that....mine is a 77 xs650D.....and right now the light comes on without the headlight switch and goes out if you kill the motor....if I turn on the headlight switch it behaves as you described and on goes out with the key or the headlight switch...
Thanks for the great info....followed instructions and decided my problem was the brushes as predicted... replaced them and all is sort of well....voltage regulator is still suspect and the stator has seen better days I suspect....have decided to go with PMA kit...had a few questions....what do...
Does the "slap test" work with the older systems...specifically a 1977 XS650D...I have bike that runs beautifully, but does not seem to charge the battery.....I replaced the battery...have done the test for the regulator and rectifier, looked at the brushes (should one be shorter than the other...
