Check for air leaks around the carb holder if its sucking air through a gap, using your hand to choke off the air supply will in fact give it a better air fuel ratio. check it by spraying carb cleaner around the gasket between the carb holder and the engine...

    How hard is it to go battery less?

    I used the 4 cell evo 2 witch is 4 long by 2 high and 2 wide more than enough for a kick start. Works awesome runs the system no problem so I would say that the 50 would be just as adequate. They're small but powerful.

    You also don't have to break the chain to remove the cam shaft, as the manual would have you believe. Just be sure to attach some safety wire to it so that you can easily fish it out when it drops into the case :)

    Any advice on lowering the rear?

    don't forget the kickstand, as soon as you lower the rear the kickstand will steady the bike at a near vertical position... not ideal. possibly look at removing it, heating it up and bending it slightly upward to help with this. Happened to me on my 78

    you could also trim back the overhang to the outer wall of the case and then trim the cover to match giving you an exposed drive sprocket.
