Carb Jetting :: BS34s :: 1981 xs special :: short pipes + UNI foam filters

UPDATE: My 15 year old son learned how to do the oil change, sump filter change, valve adjustments and clean the carbs. Since the jets were shot, I replaced with all new... 135 air jet (stock xs650 special), 137.5 main and the 45 to the pilot. It started perfectly and I actually got a clean idle...

Carb Jetting :: BS34s :: 1981 xs special :: short pipes + UNI foam filters

I am in the process of cleaning the carbs now @jpdevol ... they were really bad. I was just surprised last night that there are 2 main jets in the diagram and that I missed it. I did change the large round main jet (prior to this) to 137.5 and the pilot jet to 45. I just wanted to make sure I...

Carb Jetting :: BS34s :: 1981 xs special :: short pipes + UNI foam filters

Not sure why/how I've missed this... there are 2 main jets on the BS34s? There is a main jet on the air filter side of the carb that has a stock 135 and a float bowl main jet that has a stock 132.5!? So if I originally used a 137.5 main on the float bowl main, but never changed the main on the...

Carb Jetting :: BS34s :: 1981 xs special :: short pipes + UNI foam filters

Hi all...been a while for me. Life definitely got in the way and my bike has been sitting with little riding/work for almost 7 years! My son is now 15.5 and we started wrenching just the other day. Basically... the bike sounds like shit as expected. Hard to start, needs full choke to run, pops...

    Help reading plugs...

Thanks 5Twins...so ignorant question #546...how do I get the plug apart to look at that area? I'm pretty good at tearing shit down, but can't figure that out.

    Help reading plugs...

Autolite #63 is the plug I'm running based off of threads on this site such as this thread. I'm running PAMCO ignition.

    Help reading plugs...

Been riding the girl around...finally! Went out for about a 30 mile ride...she got HOT HOT HOT! I think I had a bit of oil coming from the tappet covers and that was causing some smoke...but it really is riding nice. So..here are the plugs...they are white...I don't see much difference...

Rear brake shoe plate not flush, dragging

So...thanks again...I'm so friggin excited right now. I spent time last night reinstalling the rear wheel and found that it was the 'chain tighten-ers' that were/are causing the issue. I was trying to 'align' the marks on the chain tighten-er the same on both sides. I think I read that in the...

Rear brake shoe plate not flush, dragging

 Good info/thoughts Leo/5twins! Since I put on Hugh's Shorty pipes...I ain't got no center stand. My next post will be about my hernia from lifting the bike up onto stands by myself. :yikes: it's up and I'm pulling the tire tonight...I'll check all of these options and report...

Rear brake shoe plate not flush, dragging

Thanks 5twins.... I haven't ridden with the torque arm...and I didn't modify it while it was on. That being said...a couple of questions. 1. Is there supposed to be a gap between the housing and the plate? I assume that there is...if so, do you know roughly how wide of a gap, so that I can see...

Rear brake shoe plate not flush, dragging

Thanks....so...nope and nope...the torque arm didn't force it in. I assume that the brake plate and the 'brake shoe housing' have to have some gap. Why am I assuming that? because the brake plate doesn't move and the wheel does...and metal on metal would seem to a) cause things to slow down...

Rear brake shoe plate not flush, dragging

Hi all, Got the girl running and moving with a chain, front brakes are working again, almost there. I noticed when pushing the bike in neutral, there was a 'drag' coming from the rear wheel. I got down and saw that the brake shoe plate is dragging on the front of the bike (right side if...
