    Jetting and Throttle Response

Update. So I ran the bike with needle in position 2, 30 PJ, 135 MJ bike ran like crap. Would not run in gear. Switch the needle back to position 3 with 130 MJ and 30 PJ bike ran okay minute screw was at 2. Still got flat spots at 1/2 throttle. A little sputtering until the RPMs rose through the...

    Jetting and Throttle Response

5twins, Thank agin for your continued assistance! So I will put the needle back into position 2, reduce the PJ to 27.5 and reduce the MJ to 130, reset the air mixture screw and see what happens. I wont be able to make the changes for about a week, but I will post an update once I get it done...

    Jetting and Throttle Response

5Twins, Thanks for your input! So here is where I am at currently. I searched my carb kit and I have 27.5 and 30 PJ's, but only have a 135 MJ. So I installed the 30 PJ and 135 MJ, moved the needle to position 3 and mixture screws are at 3 - 3.5. The bike now runs worse. It still idles good...

    Jetting and Throttle Response

Fredintoon, Thanks for your reply. I know they need some back pressure. I saw an improvement when I put a few thumbscrews in each pipe. So I do have some. Maybe not the best setup, but is something. Not really looking at putting baffles or a slip on muffler on it.

    Jetting and Throttle Response

Leo, Your assumption is correct. '77 carbs. I know I have a bunch of extra jets in my carb kit. I will have toave to see what I have on hand before ordering. Surely will not go to the Yamaha store to buy jets as 5Twins stated that is only for fools. So I will have to use whatever I have that...

    Jetting and Throttle Response

I am trying to dial in my carbs to make them operate better. Bike idles great! No issues there. Bike even runs and rides down the road good. Current settings. PJ 32.5, MJ 140, NJ position 3. Running UNI pod filters and straight pipes. Current issue is bike bogs down at 1/2-WOT when RPMs are...

    Need Spokes

Hello, I am helping out a family member and he is trying to track down where he can get some additional spokes. He has a 1971 xs650 and it as an 18" rear wheel. I am just starting to look online for sources, but I figured I would ask to see if any Guru's on here can tell me where to first...

    Rebuild DONE!

Well it's been a long road. It all began back in the summer of 2013. Bought this bike from a guy and with little adjustments made just ride the piss out of the bike all summer until is finally just died a few weeks after Sturgis. I think the points burnt out, but a few gaskets finally let go...

    Bad front sprocket bearing sound

So I inspected the chain again and was thinking it might be a bit tight.....and yes it was. So I backed off the tension a bit and the grinding noise from the front sprocket was gone. I will keep the tensioner for a bit and monitor the set up and see how it works.

    Bad front sprocket bearing sound

Interesting. Wish I would have found this thread before I installed mine. I literally just got my bike back together and running and was rolling out of the garage yesterday and heard the same thing. Was wondering if maybe something was misaligned. But I am going to remove the monstercraftsman...

    Wiring 1977 pamco

Update...... Well still no start  Fresh gas, new plugs And there is gas in the bowls, I still have spark at the plugs. I got the same results as I did yesterday. Pops and coughs while trying to kick it over and only got that with the assistance of starting fluid. I still have...

    Wiring 1977 pamco

XSLeo, Thanks for the reply. Running the ignition with the battery and the rest of the bike (head and tail light) with the PMA and capacitor makes a lot of sense. I will set this up and give it a try to see what's going on before I hook everything up together. Thanks again for your assistance...

    Wiring 1977 pamco

Update. So I have tested the pamco with a battery with this method. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v178/burlymugg/XS_pamcotest_2.jpg I have spark and the bike fires with the assistance of starting fluid. Just doesn't run. I have taken the carbs off, cleaned them and drained the gas. I will...

    Wiring 1977 pamco

Pamco pete, Thanks for reply. Yes I am in the dark with the new ignition/charging system I have. That was one of my questions. Can I use what I currently have? I was running the do it yourself 3 phase rectifier and the seperate 115 automotive regulator. You are saying that those units will not...
