Any Machine Shops in Alabama with xs650 experience

I have got my bike torn down for a top end rebuild. I am ordering first over pistons and rings and was looking for a shop to bore my sleeves, clean up the head and check the seats on the valves. Does anyone have any experience with any shops in Alabama? Would just any machine shop be able to do...

First partially custom build, basically like all the others

Thanks for the input twomany. If I am following what your saying then I need to move my caliper more rearward and make a longer bar or move my mount closer to the axle and form more of a 90. I'll post a better pic for you to look over in just a little bit. Thanks again

First partially custom build, basically like all the others

I fabricated some forward controls, welded in some neck gussets from HHB, and made a set of ape hangers out of conduit(just for looks) to try and get a feel for the bars I wanted. I am a big guy and even though they have 12 inches of rise my arms are still barely higher than 90 degrees from my...

I was really fond of my wassell style tank, but it just doesn't follow the lines like I wanted. I am more into a retro type bike, and I guess the way I picture it a sportster tank just looks right. I know that a lot of folks are tired of seeing a sportster tank and a TC Bros hardtail. I realize...

First partially custom build, basically like all the others

Keep in mind that from this point on most everything is just mocked up. Got started swapping everything over and immediately regretted buying something that someone else welded. It took a lot of persuasion and several dirty words before the motor even though about lining up. Plus I had to expand...

First partially custom build, basically like all the others

Then I ran across a decent deal on another frame with a TC Bros hard tail aready welded on. Its not my favorite tail by far. I think the lines are too steep. However the price was right and I am on a limited(poor as dirt) budget. So i picked that up and some footpegs and kicker pedal. I really...

First partially custom build, basically like all the others

I kinda got into this a little ways before thinking about posting it on the forum. I imagine no one is going to be blown away by it anyway. It's nothing that hasn't been done before really. I started out with a what I guess is being called a "bratstyle type bike. It is a 1979 xs650. I am going...

New member and first xs650.... with charging/wiring issues

Thanks for replying. I ended up just going with a HHB pma. Saved a lot of hassle. I've pretty much got it all sorted out now. Tank had built up more rust since you cleaned it I guess. Had to strip the carbs and clean the screens. About the only issue I have with it now is it really doesn't ant...

It is capped off and isolated as far as I can tell. I haven't actually taken the side case off I have just been working through the alternator cover. Could there be things to learn inside of there? Bare Wire maybe. I have been hesitant to remove it because I am not sure how the hydraulic clutch...

I think I have tried all I can manage. I have done all the tests and they appear to be okay except I only get the 11 or 12 VAC when going from white to ground. Basically nothing when checking phase to phase. I am afraid to buy stock parts because Im not real sure what the problem is. I may just...

I should have mentioned that I had done that. My lead are .4 ohms. The 1 ohm was after adjustment for lead resistance. The only thing that really seemed strange was my resistance from ring to ring on the rotor was good. The resistance from each ring o ground measured infinite. I read that one of...

Alright. I have 1ohm phase to phase. No continuity to ground. Does that mean I am dealing with a bad stator?

Alright here is an update on what I have tried and what readings I came up with. I used the diagram that daddygcycles posted above. I verified that despite being an older bike it has a later rotor/stator setup. I removed the brush holders and verified that there was a void behind both brush...

No. Scratch that. I do need the one nylon screw because thats the one with voltage, I imagine a metal screw would ground through the threads and short. At least now I know more about what I have. Still unsure why putting the green to ground causes a short. Seems like it should be at the same...
