forgive me for just trying to see the appeal in these bikes! hey i own a lifted Jeep that most people would consider a horrible riding, underpowered gas hog but i love it so i understand! So i recently bought one of these bikes as a commuter. I've only ridden it for a couple months so far, and its still fun being out on the open road but i gotta know something... what do all of you see in these bikes! They're a chore to ride cause they vibrate like crazy and the trans is missing...

thanks for all the helpful tips. i found that the speedo cable was broken, and the tach cable is ok but the tach itself doesn't move. i'll try some of your tricks and see if i can get it working again. But as was stated earlier, i'm in minnesota so we'll still have ice on the roads well into July!

well i just bought the bike and it didn't run when i got it. On my first ride is when i discovered neither one of them worked. It sat a looong time before i got it, so i bet that contributed to it

So i have a speedometer and tach that don't work. Not knowing much about it or if there are common problems, can anyone point me in a direction to start diagnosing?

well the thing will at least idle now, but only one cylinder is firing. My next question is about that rubber plug over the pilot jets... one of mine is questionable and i'm curious what the purpose of that is and how important it is that it seals tighly?

So silly question maybe, but wheres the mix screw, i wasn't aware that it had one... and gggGary i see you're from Baraboo, i'm from the twin cities so if these carbs end up kicking my ass i might consider a trip down there!

Yeah the more i think about it, it only makes sense that the carbs aren't near as clean as they should be, especailly the pilot circuits. Thanks for the helpful hints guys

Well the thing runs fine with the choke on, so i know its fuel related. I'm not getting enough fuel for some reason. I'm not worried about other things right now, i just want to get it to idle on its own. I did disassemble the carbs, freed everything up and cleaned everything up, then...

Well, as the title states, my 81 650 special only runs when the choke is open. It runs the best when it is fully open, and the further you close it the worse it runs. I've had the carbs off twice, cleaned them to the best of my knowledge, all the jets seem to be clean, and the carbs are getting...
