Update on the bike:
- Cam chain is still set correctly (used the pin hole on the camshaft under timing advance unit to confirm it is at 12 o clock and 6 o clock at TDC for each cylinder.
-Changed the oil, there was less than a half quart in there but it was pretty clean...

I have a 1977 XS650D that starts fine with kick start but the electric start seams tired/does not get it started.
Whenever I press the starter button it cranks over slowly and only ever starts if the engine is already hot and I am lucky.
My bike doesn't have a decompression...
I just finished rebuilding the top end of my 1977 Xs650d (Had a holed piston on left side).
it starts, right side is dialed in, but left side timing is either at the fire mark or closer to the top dead center Mark (see picture) going back and forth.
Any idea what would cause this? It seams...

I got the engine taken apart and it was a hole in the left piston.
The valves and pistons are in terrible shape (see pictures). Do you have any idea how this type of damage is caused?
