Hi guys,

I'm getting an oil mist on the sidecover of my 76. It has a breathersetup of a pinched metal tube with a small opening, I'm guessing that's where it comes from.

Oil is not topped up beyond the top mark, any takers?

Regards Lasse

Breather? On the Rt. side Cover? Clutch side? I know the oil pump is on that side and the passages for oil flow was drilled and capped as needed. Maybe you got some seepage from one of these capped passeges? How about a pic so we can get an Idea of what your seeing?

I'll get a picture up in a few hours. Could be linked to the inconsistent dipstick readings.

The breather will blow some oil out. That is pretty much true of all engines. Thats why the stock breather went into the air box so the engine would pull the oil mist in and burn it in the cylinders.

Here is a picture of what I am experiencing. I was wrong on the breather setup, it has two exits, one to the pinched tube, and one goes into the airbox.

Before I took off today, I was ~4mm below topmark on the dipstick. Now it's been about 3hrs. since I returned, so I checked oil, and there is nothing on the dipstick.

I'm resting it on the threads. There is no smoke out the pipes, no dripping, a bit of sweating around a few gaskets, but thats it.

You can be loosing quite a bit of oil from an intake valve before she starts smokin'
Isn't oil level checked threaded in? Might try some paper taped on by the carbs try to narrow down where that gunk on the side cover is coming from, could even be front brake or a leaky fork seal. amazing what a pic will do, I thought you meant the oil was on the clutch cover.

Quite abit, I'd agree, but from almost at the top to NOTHING in 276kms? I never check it threaded in, I let it rest on the threads.

Fork seals a new and non leaking.

Hmm, the paper thing could work, will think of something.

Dipstick measured out OK.

Plugs dry, albeit with some brown/greyish "caking" on them. One plug was loose, but no debris around, a bit of debris on the other plug (helicoiled), could be a little leak from that fix maybe, but nothing like the consumption I am seeing I believe.

No signs of oil in the airfilters.

When filling to the top mark, I am getting a very slippery clutch, which COULD indicate that I am overfilling, but my dipstick tells me I am not.

Also I taped the pinched tube with duct tape, so if I am not getting the oil mist now I reckon it should come from that breather tube. Meaning I have something worn in the top end :)

Any chance it's from something like one of the valve covers, or the camshaft seal, or head gasket? Mine seems to have very minor leaks in a couple places - figure it's just mimicking the bonnevilles!

The very first time I did an oil change I put in 2.5 ltr. and I recall not seeing anything on the dipstick at that time, I think. Is that normal?

When I did my last oil change, I put 2qts, measured with dipstick screwed in, and it was exactly at the full mark.

Screwed in? All manuals tells us it needs to be resting on the threads, but if it works for you, then I should probably try it too.

my bike gets that same oil on side cover its the cam shaft seal have replaced the seals a few times now tryed ones from mikes the bearing shop etc.preasently using vitton seals which are the highst temp ratting you can get left side is now good but right is still weaping a bit wish I could tell you why its doing it butt its got me beat good luck
