Site Rules and Guidelines: Discussion

Sure! All members have already agreed to the following when they signed up:

By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws.

Not being rude is more of a guideline than a rule at this point since the definition of being rude is so subjective and different to everyone. It will be handled on a case by case basis.

Vulgar language is ok as long as it's not directed at anyone. Threats, harassment, racist remarks, discrimination, and anything else illegal in most countries won't be tolerated.

So yes, being rude or vulgar toward other members will be incorporated into the Guidelines in some way.

Thanks!

Keep them coming.

Awesome!! it's realy hard to find a family freindly forum! and thats the secret of success!! :D

While I hope this is a friendly place, it's not necessarily going to be family friendly. For the most part, people can say what they want to say and bullshit like they would hanging out in the shop, garage, or at a bar.

Yeah that won't happen... Things will pretty much stay like they are as far as content. We'll do our best to label threads containing content that might not be safe for work (nudity) or viewing with your kids in the same room (videos with offensive language).

I'm not a huge fan of the (NSFW) label... It means Not Safe for Work (if you didn't already know) and is used commonly in forums to mark threads that might not be safe to view at work (or in front of the family) because they contain things like nudity or videos with offensive language. Since those things are allowed here, I was thinking about setting up some prefixes like in the classifieds, so users could filter the forum for certain types of content depending what they don’t want to see (or want to see). So what should the categories be? Should there just be one called (Adult)? Or should it be specific like (Nudity) and (Audio)? It’s not like audio and video start playing right when you open a thread, so maybe those disclaimers could be posted in the same post as the video and no prefix would be needed. What do you guys think we should do to label threads with “adult content”?

How about "The Happy Hour Garage" (Adult's Only) it could be a section of the forum where the Adult content would be displayed and you could make where you have to subscribe to that forum for it to appear on the regular board also if you wanted to regulate it better with a disclaimer age limit of over 18 to enter when a member suscribes to the section.

I gave it some more thought and the easiest way to control the adult content would be to make a section for Everthing else other than Xs 650 discussion and put the disclaimer that some threads may have nudity so if your under 18 leave this section now......or something similar and if adult content is posted in another section you could just easily move it to the adult material section.....what do think?

The "Happy Hour Garage" is perfect ...:agree:

I've been thinking about creating an off topic forum for a while now, but people have been doing pretty good sticking to motorcycle related discussion so I thought adding an off topic forum would just promote off topic discussion. I want to keep the main focus of the site on XS650s, other motorcycles, and motorcycle related things like tools. A little bit of off topic discussion is ok, so I thought an off topic section, with an adult content sub forum (that was only viewable if you were a member) would work best. But what if you have a motorcycle related thread with adult content? Now we would need two sub forums. So instead of all that, what about one of these options:

Three discussion forums:

The Garage: XS650 and Motorcycle related discussion
The Lounge: Non-motorcycle related discussion
The Back Room: Members only

To keep off topic discussion to a minimum in The Lounge, things could be done like threads could be deleted after a certain amount of time, and posts wouldn't count toward your total post count, etc. The Back Room is where threads with nudity would get transferred and would be viewable by registered members only. It would have to be heavily moderaded so it wasn't just full of requests for nudity.

Maybe just have The Garage and The Back Room to keep off topic discussion down to a minimum. The Back Room would be a sub forum of the garage and would be viewable by members only. Any threads with nudity would get moved there or could get posted there.

The only problem with these ideas is that just as adding an off topic discussion would lead to more off topic disccution, adding a forum just for adult content would lead to more adult content.

Any ideas or input?

I've seen a few good forums go to shit lately from all the personal attacks and people that just want to cause problems. While there is nothing wrong with a healthy and friendly argument, when it gets personal and out of hand, that isn't helping anyone or doing anything constructive and it is not worth using server resources to preserve. I know it hasn't been a problem here, but to be proactive instead of reactive, I've added guideline 7 and 8. Feedback is welcome.
