F-N Harley Wanna be's

I was working on my buddy's airhead and the last piece we needed was a new battery. His BMW takes a HUGE battery about the size of the one in your car and so do many Harleys (apparently). The Harley dealer was the only parts counter open at the time, so we figured we'd stop in and see if they might have something we could use. 270$ for a harley branded battery with the same specs as one you can get online for around 80$. Of course it had some stickers on it, but wow... nearly 300$ for a battery?

I'll take the drug dealing, prostitution ring running, scary ass thug gang member bikers I remember from my childhood over these credit card wielding weekend posers any day.

The most dangerous gang of them all: Old White Money, aka RUBs.

I bought a matching pair of Harley-Davidson brand helmets last fall at an H-D dealership that was going out of business. Because the dealer was liquidating I got them for 80% off. Otherwise, I would/could have never bought them. It's comfortable and fits well but I noticed the other day that the stitches are coming out of the zip-on ear covers.

Look, I got nothin against Harleys or Riders. But I don't like arrogant or judgemental pricks of any kind, and of a Saturday arvo that particular crowd that congregates there are of that nature…

It is a bit like outlawing certain dog breeds because they are deemed dangerous. Not usually the dogs fault but the type of person who is attracted to it for it's reputation and then trains the dog to bring out aggressive nature. When it comes to bikes a particular group of wankers are drawn to the H-D brand and having a good bike does stop them from being wankers……

I reacon that all Harleys should be automatic (gearbox)that way they wont have to take thier hand of thier dick to change gear.A good question to ask a harley rider,If harley davidson made airoplanes whould you fly in one,

Harley makes some great bikes, 1200 sportster comes to mind, but they will always be a laughing stock until they quit marketing cool as something you buy. 3 out of 5 harley riders are just tremendous dickheads with no mechanical inclination. Luckily the other two nearly make up for it.

If Harley would just make great bikes without the faux cool hype, what a world it would be.

I am a mechanic at a Harley dealership, now before everyone starts booing me and sending me hate mail let me say I very much agree with MOST of you, I have a great hatred for about 90% of the people that step foot into the shop, I really get tired of having to wire GPS to handlebars, cup holders to saddle bags and handlebars, and it sickens me that now some harleys even come with an iPod, whoever posted about the cost of a battery $270 is a ton of money for a battery that is about 100 more than our most expensive one but I will say a lot of aftermarket electronics for some reason do not last with hd for some reason especially batteries, I have seen tons and tons of aftermarket batteries with the same specs as a harley battery not last a year on a Harley, don't know why but they don't.
Whoever posted about the gift cards not working at all Harley dealers, that's true but you gotta remember Harley doesn't own any dealerships, they are all independently owned, it would be like going to you local yamaha dealer getting a gift card and trying to use it at another yamaha shop, won't happen unless they happen to own both shops. The money from one storedoesnt go to the same place as the money from another..... Anyways that's my piece of mind, take it as you want to, but I do agree, most of the people that ride harleys are complete douche bags and don't belong near a motorcycle, but give the rest of us a chance :)

On the Harley card; that appears to be one little angle Harley missed. they SHOULD have a corporate Harley gift card good at any Harley dealer, That card would easily be worth (10s of?) millions in sales every year world wide.

You make some great points. It's been my experience that not every dealer has the same amount of mark-up on the products they sell. Overhead and profit margins are never the same between businesses. A $170 battery at one dealer could sell for $270 at another dealer. Back in 1978, I bought a new '78 Superglide for $2850 but some other dealers wanted as much as $3850 for the exact same bike. Some dealers make their money on volume, others on single sales depending on their own business philosophy.

There used to be 6 Harley dealers within 30 minutes of my house, now there are 3. There was 7 or 8 Honda dealers, now they're down to 4. We had 3 Yamaha dealers, now there's 1. You can bet that prices have since gone up in my local area.

And yes, my own experience tells me that working with the public sucks.

PS. Boo!

Love my xr.....haven't been back to the dealer since I rolled out of there. A lot of idiots operating all kinds of vehicles and just as many with irrational emotional attachments to a plethora of brands. Just remember who you're doing the disservice when you cease to think and rely on blanket judgments that bolster your ego.

Just a side note the xs650 motor is largely based on the Horax 500 engine which is a German design so should fit right in with the Benz crowd (if they were smart enough to realize it)

Hosk (Japan) modeled it after the Horex (Germany) twin but was mainly their own design internally. Showa purchased Hosk and then Yamaha purchased Showa in 1960. Put the engine out to 650 and... the rest is history.

On a side note.. the only thing Japan is 100% guilty of copying is all of their 2 stroke engines.. from one man, from one company and country. GDR (Communist Germany) , DKW (then became MZ) and Walter Kaaden. The 4 cylinder 2 stroke GP Bike Barry Sheene rode to victory is literally 4 MZ 125cc engines in a square configuration.

The last time I was at the Hog Runners shop was for a charity ride.. I chose the back of the pack because some were even wearing Hog Cologne ..... :wtf:

You know - even the guys with harley underwear are better than the dudes in SUVs. (though, they probably are the dudes in SUVs too), but anyhow.

of course, all that said the very first bobber I ever saw was a dude with a harley. couldn't even tell you what it was except that it was a soft tail - if that's what the mono shock harleys are.

It was low and simple and attractive with a lot of function and no crap on it. He had made his own fenders and fittings.

He was talking about how he'd try to get it entered into harley shows and they would totally shun him because all they wanted to see were bike with 10 thousand dollars worth of harley crap bolted to them.

You think the Harley Riders are bad... I met a woman the other day who owns a Can Am Spyder Trike and she couldn't even tell me what kind of bike/trike she was riding.

I found it very hard to walk away and not laugh in her face as she sat there covered in shiny new leather from head to toe and complained about helmet hair.

^^^ i agree, atleast a harley rider can ride a real motorcycle. i can't believe they're allowing those spyder things on the motorcycle practical test

Motorcycles have become far more about image than riding. It's about being a biker and not loving being out on the road.

But there is hope. I joined this forum because I was ready to build/maintain my own bike. I've been turning wrenches every second since (but I am still no good at it). Every noob we get here is one more rider that turned to their garage instead of the dealership.
