Loud Pipes Are Killing Motorcycles

Bull Shit, if you think loud pipes are saving your life then you're a fool and have no business riding. The ONLY thing loud pipes do is piss off the people around you. Loud pipes do more to turn the public against motorcyclists than all the toy rides put together.

Hi there,I am basing my statement on personal experiences here and I have had my share of fools while riding.Your'e probably right about the pissing off factor, but hey If that's all it's doing then what's the problem? What's wrong with toy runs? What I'm saying is that Loud pipes may as well piss ppl of greatly but are they a road safety issue? It's a jungle out there and survival means everything.Have a nice day.

Well, I just talked to my good buddy who is a Maryland state trooper and he's a real dickhead I must say. Delmarva bike week is going on and the beach towns are LOADED with bikes in Maryland and Delaware. Thousands of them.
I asked him what the biggest complaint he gets about motorcycles is, not just this week, but all the time.
You know what it was? RECKLESS DRIVING!!!!
The 9 out of 10 calls he gets are for bikers speeding, sharing lanes, wheelies, "not using proper signaling while weaving in and out of traffic like a bunch of rebels who own the fucking road" (his words) and the number 1 is going in between cars to avoid traffic. .
He said loud pipes are annoying to him and he will pull you over for them, but reckless driving is what he responds to the most.
So I think loud pipes are not the only thing killing the motorcycle.

Fatman, that was funny.

The states aren't about to throw a revenue resource away,it's a business just like anything else and it would be foolish on their part cuz it generates millions of DOLLARS that puts money back in the economy that keeps people employed who would other wize be sucking the government dry of it's money.

+ 1 on Fat Man's video, now that's funny! " What did I do? Pop a tire?" NO dummy, you took your eyes off the road to shift, you dumb shit. Now, as far as reckless driving, people have always had a fear of motorcycle's, 'cause of previous media hype. It seemed like motorcycle accident's were big news because of the fatality rate. Then the club's came along, and now we are all criminal's. And the noise levels seem to enforce that image. Boy, has this thread taken a turn. The point was about legislature trying to regulate bike's out of existence.

Well, that's what happens. You start a thread with a subject everyone knows will ruffle feathers and boom, people start arguing and the thread goes all over the place.

Jack, I guess I wasn't clear in my posting. I should have said, Loud pipes are killing older motorcycles instead of Loud pipes are killing motorcycles.

States have nothing to loose by pushing older motorcycles off the road. Newer motorcycles already meet the 80 db Federal limit. Getting rid of older bikes will mean more sales of newer bikes and owners of newer bikes pay far more in taxes than owners of older bikes. Think about it.

That's not true. A large % of the newer HD's on the road have some sort of straight/un-baffled pipes. Jap cruisers and sportbikes too.

How about your loud pipes startle and scare the shit out of some old lady, or kid texting and they drive right over in your lane?

Loud pipes piss people off, particularly if you act like a dickhead with them-and plenty do. Good brakes save lives. Good helmets save lives. Good gear saves lives. Riding without your head in your ass saves lives. Loud pipes piss people off.

Ha ha that's funny thanks for the laugh about old lady and about texting, well it's actually against the law to do so over here. You either text or drive but U can't do both.I have heard some bikes so loud that it would even make a new born baby jump out of it's pusher/pram and run away.LOL.What I think has happened is that ppl are getting the pissed off factor confused with the safety factor. What may seem loud to some may be acceptable to others.I have found that to get the engine to perform at it's best is to make some modifications and a part of that includes opening up the exhaust for flow.So what the plod over here are saying is that there is more chance of little Mary texting running over the little old lady waiting to croos the road.

Well captain zoom you sound like a real dick head calling the police 3 times on a fellow brother just because you didn't like his riding style or his pipes. Perhaps if you had discussed the matter with him the matter could have been resolved without the police being involved. Now you have a rider who has been hassled by the man and I don't think he will change now. A couple of days ago a policeman was killed answering a call where no crime was in progress just a person in a neighborhood and someone called. There are a very large percentage of people living in the U.S.A . that are mentally ill sometime during there lifeime let's say 1 out of 3 I think it the percentage is larger. Since at this this point no one knows what happend between the two none of this would have happened in the first place if the call was not made. I saw a 70 year woman get a shot with a tazer. Good and bad in all groups police and biker gangs some hand out a free pass in case you get yoked up by a bad one a second chance :D Havent received one from a police officer yet. Now let's get back to crazys and loud pipes. One sat. I was working on my carbs an off idle stumble a couple of Quick throttle chops not that I went past his house doing 100 MPH or nothing. I lived in a suberban setting and streets are pretty long and I see this fellow come running out of his house apearing to have something to say. So I stop in fromt of his house kill the bike a 1961 iron head sportster with a set of shot gun duals earley style harley sporster mufflers the bike had straght pipes on it when I bought it and ran like shit the reason for the bog . Well this fool went off on me screaming You run over one of my kids and I'll kill you. Oh no a crazy I said to myself keep them out of the street and they won't get run over in a normal tone of voice I replyed. I had kids of my own one of the first things I tought them stay out of the street. At this point he went over the top :yikes: And pulled a screwdriver from his back pocket not considered a deadly wepon if used properly to remove screws but it is if held up in ones face making stabing motions with it. By this time several of his neighbors were out in the front yards since it was a nice sunny day birds chirping flowers the smell of jasmine in a cool summer breeze. You know that day that perfect day to watch a crazed biker to pummel their neighbor into the ground kind of day is what I'm thinking by now. So the dude makes contact now he has an assult with a deadly weapons charge he didn't know he had.:D What to do???? I know the free pass a second chance for him by that time he I think he knew he needed one back off mother fucker before you get hurt his second chance. Snap back time out of my dream and back into yours he may have been crazy but he wasn't no fool and ran back into his house. :wtf::laughing:

Here in the US, the Federal Government has already mandated an 80 db limit on new motorcycles for a few years now and I seriously doubt there have been any unbaffled motorcycle built at the factory in over 50 years unless the catalytic converters on many new bikes are also serving as baffles. All new motorcycles have some sort of sound reduction on them. If not baffles and mufflers then they've figured out another way.

They put aftermarket pipes on them. Of course they come that way, but they don't always stay that way.

Maybe you can get some video to blackmail him the next time he pulls you over.

I've been ridin dirtbikes all over my town here in the outskirts of san diego since i was in 2nd grade and all it ever took for me to get a distracted drivers attention was a quick rev. My loud a$$ exhaust has saved me a couple times since my bikes didn't have horns like the street bikes do.

Truth. I haven't been riding for ever like some, and already I've had countless times where having a louder bike has got someones attention who would have pulled out in front of me. My bikes not super loud, have short headers and short, not very quiet, mufflers. Still probably no louder than a new harley, but still. There's been many times when someone would be coming to a stop sign in front of me, half look one way, and start to move, pull the clutch, rev a bit, they see you and don't go further. Not that they were at run me over distance, but still would have been a dick move on their part if they did pull out.

Loud(er) pipes save lives. Super loud pipes make guys with sleeveless shirts on 20 foot long OCC style choppers look like idiots.

You "loud pipes, save lives" people should start thinking about loud horns, loud tires. or some other silly method of saving your lives, because it is only a very short time before your local safety inspection will include a DB test.

Maybe an investment in rider training instead of open pipes would be an intellectually prudent place to go...
