So my roomate Ben called a guy about an XS. The fellow said it wasnt charging and the stator was probably caput. Ben asked if he had anything else kicking around and he had his sons raked and hardtailed 71 xs! How much? $600. hmmmm So a couple days later I borrow a trailer from the guy who sold me my TX and I'm off!

This guy runs a shop out in Alfred (very french part of Ontario) and years ago his son wanted an "old school bobber" So they gets their mitts on this bike, "hardtail it" (pics to follow) and add a springer front end. This sits the bike at too much of an angle so the they rake it. They've got most of it together when lo and behold his son gets into a messy divorce and dad buy the bike off him for a pittence to help out. 6 years later I enter the picture. and speaking of pictures here we go.

Chomed rear hub. WHY chrome perfectly nice alunimum?

Again with the chome. French Canadians LOVE chrome

Our brilliant and well executed rear end......:wtf:

Not sure how I feel about his method of raking but it IS straight and solid, albeit ugly.

More of the bike, everything is kinda mocked up here as envisioned by the previous owner. The seat is shit and will be changed, Im not even gonna bother figuring out that fender until the rear end is put together properly.

It is actually a kinda cool looking bike, lots of potential.

Again, this guy has been running a succesful shop for quite a while, supports himself and his family on it and goes ahead and calls this a hardtail?

Ah well. So as far as I know this is a 71, although no comression release is evident anywhere. The side covers that came in the box of shit seems to be correct for the early period bikes. Compression seems really good to my patented kickonometer, the front drum is something Im prettty happy about, and I was suprised by the existance of the springer. I'm sure I could just look up the numbers on it or the ownership and know for sure but at this moment I dont care. First things first is to get the rear end sorted. Instead of going the order everything (while bashing harley guys who do the same thing to customise their rides) Im gonna enlist the help of several friends who weld for a living to help with the frame. Everything else will be bent, moulded, and bodged together by yours truly. I havnt got the coin to build a $5000 oldschool-bobber/chopper-billetabortion, nor does that appeal to me. so stay tuned. I guess the TX is just gonna have to stay in one piece and continue to get the ever living shit ridden out of it:bike:

Looks like a good score to me! And Id have to agree with you its kinda cool the way it sits . Its got a lot of potential!! Have fun whatever you do with it, and keep us posted on progress!!

No compression release and a 3 bolt left front valve cover would be correct for a 71. (no electric start) This should help the winter pass. Keep the pics coming.

While I am confident that it wont fall apart, I am going to re-do the hardtail. Its just not right. Not in a rush to ride it as I've got the TX and winter is almost here.

So I spoke to my buddy Chevy(Denis) today, he's a bike mechanic thats helped me in the past with fine tuning my other XS. I told him what I had and showed him some pictures. He thinks he there might be some weld on hartails kicking around our buddy Felixs shop. If there is he'll weld it on for me, failing that were just gonna buy some tubing, bend to shape and do it. Awesome guy, totally knows his shit. Its great fun playing motorcycle with him.

Gonna try and wire up the coils and see if I can make the engine go vroom tomorrow after I get back from a ride I've got planned with my brother in law. Stay tuned.
