Hey Guys,

I'm getting ready to convert and old DT250 front wheel over to with my 17mm axles on my XS and I'm wondering if you all have any tips on drilling out the shoe side of the brake.

I've already found the bearings to swap out for it.

Thanks for the help!

Taylor

Finding the right bearings is the hard part. Drilling it out is the easy part. I don't know what kind of equipment you have at your disposal. Do you have a mill, drill press, or just a good'ol cordless?

The drill press will be your best choice. Make sure you clamp the drum backing plate down nice and perpendicular to the quill. 17mm bits are hard to find but you should be able to get ahold of a 43/64" bit somewhere. Really I don't foresee you running i to any major problems. Is there something in-particular that you are concerned about?

Jobber length 17mm are seen pretty reasonable on fleabay.
This one is $7.00 shipped

  • + We will ship worldwide EXCEPT Italy, Nigeria, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, India, China, Hong Kong, Macau

Cool, sounds easy enough.

I'm not concerned about anything really in particular, just tryin to get the feel for it before i start drilling.

Any certain type of drill bit i should use?

Don't over think it man. Just don't use a wood bit.

The only real issues are straight and centered. A drill press should take care of the straight and a "new" metal bit should be enough to hold center. Drum shoes have a "little" leeway on center.

Taylor,

I am considering using the same wheel on my build. Where did you find the bearings?

Thanks.

Carl

The bearings are ATV bearings, I ordered them online.

Search the demensions 35x17x10 or wheel bearing 6003 and you'll have loads of options. I spend $13 bucks with shipping.

I just did the swap today and it all went great, i was a little off centered on the drilling but was able to get it back on track... so just go at it carefully
