Although I do think this bad boy is clean and Im sure its a very nice motorcycle, There is no way in hell I could justify spending that much on one of these guys. Especially someones "Cafe" project which is really only a new seat and bars with a fancy racing stripe paint job.

I could see $6000 if it runs good. I would not accept that for mine.

You people on the coast are probably the biggest buyers of Kern County Meth. Kern is noted for the coastal people drownning in our river, meth production, and prisons. Maybe the meth has something to do with drownnings. It impairs the ability to read caution signs. Not taking up for the Valley in 3 years I retire and I am in San Diego.

If you search $6000 dollar bikes in the Bay Area Craigslist a beautifully restored and fully rebuilt from the bottom up 1966 Triumph Bonneville.

Hmmmmm.... 66 Bonnie or 75 Yamaha for the same price. Hard decision ...

A stockish 72 in decent but by no means pristine condition just brought 3900 on Ebay.....................

But the Bonnie is a four speed iirc. I love me a bike with only for gears.

Anyway, I feel bad for the poster of that craigslist ad. He seems to think that cafe is just a look and doesn't involve actually saving weight or getting more power out of the engine to be a cafe RACER. I'd hate to pull up to him on my stock looking bike and disgrace his "racer".

People are attrated to high dollar items. If you try to be honest and list your bike for what it is really worth, people think it's junk.....:wtf:

Um,that's exactly what a cafe racer is. "Cafe racer" is a derogatory term coined by actual racers. Only the guys they were making fun of didn't get it so the term became cool. How many of these bikes will actually see a track? If you strip a bike down, hop up the motor, then compete against other motorcycles on a race track then you just call it a race bike.

Cafe Racer is to just race your buddies to the nearest coffee house or bar.
Track Bike would be for the Track.

Im working on my Beer Racer as I get enough free coffee at work.

Id have to agree to that 6k price tag is absurd but some band wagoner would buy it just to be cool.
Buying it and building it are completely opposite ends of the spectrum.

I bet a period correct 66 Bonnie even a 60's-70's chopper would go for that tho.

From the research I've done, the term cafe racer came from England were you were at a cafe and you picked a long song on the juke box, jumped on your bike and rode it to a set destination and back before the song ended.
The destination had to be far enough away so most of the trip you had to do the ton.

I guess the charitable view would be that he is testing the upper end of the market - is there a rich, ignorant sucker out there?

is there a rich, ignorant sucker out there?
One of the masters of marketing (P.T.Barum) says there is one born every minute.
And that was in his conservative times. Now days it probably has doubled.
Listening to the managers at work the highest price paid IS the prize.
If you buy a $500 phone that you don't know how to use what else(other than bragging rights) could be the point?

XS Leo is right on the Cafe racer front. The term was coined from groups of bikers hanging out at transports cafes as, at the time they werent welcome anywhere else such as bar etc due to the preconceived ideas that they were "trouble". Cafes such as the Ace Cafe in London where bikers would meet and hang out were very popular and now have an almost cult status. The bikes, particularly Triumphs, Nortons etc would be modded with clip on bars and excess fat trimmed off to get the lean low looking Cafe Racer look still popular today. In fact those two bikes were so well modified they spawned a new brand of their own - The "Triton" a mix of triumph engines and Norton frames or vice versa "Record racing" was when they would race to a roundabout and back, aiming to do it before the track ended. The goal was to crack the 100 mph mark or the ton. Bikers of the time wore this as a badge of honour. At the same time another club the 59 Club was started by a Church Curate to give the young bikers a source of focus, minus the religion. Following leaders of the 59 ers such as Fathers Bill Shergold and Graham Hullet are now legendary - Dog collar wearing bikers at the time caused much uproar amongst certain crowds. However they did much to support and promote the bikers, their machines and the way of life we still love today.

I've got my tracker up for sale for $6500.00 firm. Mostly just fishin' right now. I know it's high. Is it worth it? Depends. You couldn't duplicate the bike for that. On the other side is market value. I also don't need to sell the bike. If it doesn't sell I'll keep it. Just sayin'.

Cafe is not the only misused term. Bobber, Chopper and tracker all get misused.
When the term bobber first was used it meant that you removed anything that didn't help the bike go fast or stop. You removed or "bobbed" fenders and such. No frame mods.
A chopper was when you cut the frame to do mods.
So when most "bob" an XS650 by cutting off the frame and adding a hardtail, it shouldn't be called a bobber but a chopper.
Trackers are track bikes, whether they get used on the dirt or pavement. These bikes had many mods to increase speed and handling. Not many work well on the street but many copy the style.
I guess that can be said about most styles, just copies of something else.
