Well I took my motor apart this afternoon and found a broken piece in the right right side cover which I traced to being the post that the kick start return spring is held against. I was planning to ditch my electric starter and now don't know what to do about fixing this.

Anyone have tips on fixing it? I don't think welding would be strong enough. Maybe drill and tap a hole and put a post in?

+1 I did mine like this it's not hard at all and is working fine now. I eyeballed mine but if I did it again I'd try to use a drill block of some sort as a guide for a better bolt hole.
I used shop rags to catch the chips and that worked fine. Then vacuumed up with the old shop vac, hooked up the spring on the new bolt perch and buttoned her up, oiled up and hit the road.

Thanks guys sounds like a solid fix! Glad others have got it to work well. Time to use that drill block I bought a while back!
