77 Yamaha XS650 frame-forks/TC bros hardtail.
..No brakes, just a bare frame at the moment.

81 or 82 yamaha maxim 550 'chain drive' wheels says the guy i may purchase them off of. 19 front, 16 rear

Question is, will they fit the XS? if so what mods will be needed if any?

I'm assuming you are referring to the spiral spoke wheels. I plan to use a pair of those wheels for the 82 heritage I picked up this fall. The axles are smaller diameter than the xs650, 17mm rear, 15mm front. Also the rear sprocket has more teeth than the 650's, and stock available xj550 sprockets generally don't go below 44 teeth. But I picked up a drive hub from an 81 xs400 seca and will be able to get a stock sprocket with 35 teeth. I am also using the xj550 swing arm which is direct bolt on. Since you plan to hard tail would have to request smaller diameter rear axle plates.

The front wheel is more difficult. The easiest course for me is to change the triple tree, use the xj forks, which are 36mm. People have adapted wheels by changing the bearings, but in this case to get a 17mm bearing for the front wheel to use with the xs650 is expensive, I think around $40 each, IIRC from my research,

Hope this helps.

Ya I'd rather not change forks and order smaller plates just for a set of wheels. I don't mind buying bearings for front if that's the fix. Rear tho, has to be another way.. Damn I was pumped to run these.

Yes they are the directional double spoke mag wheels.

Hotrdd, I checked out your fender thread, like what you've done. Just a couple quick questions; Do you know if the PO used the xj swingarm and if so have you noticed any issues with chain alignment? Also any info on the sprocket? Thanks, Harvey

I can get you some photo's of the swing arm and some measurements of the sprocket but I am not sure if it's XS or XJ. I just built with what the P.O. Had in the box. I believe that the swing arm is XS though and there aren't any issues with chain alignment so far. But then again the thing hasn't seen any miles yet :-(

The rear fender is going to be changed as the on in the photo is a piece of junk and I need to do something that has a better radius in line with the current rim and wheel.

I did a mock up of the XJ550 wheel and swing arm on a '79 frame this past summer. My plan is to use the stock rear fender. As I said above, everything meshed pretty well, I just wasn't sure about the chain alignment. Anyway, things have changed, I sold the engine that I was going to use, but then a month later came across the '82 Heritage at a good price, so now everything's going to switch to that bike, still plan to use the stock fender, but a different rear light and some sort of modified seat. Since I work on my bikes outside I have to wait till Spring to start up again. :(

SO.... I am wanting to run a pair of your FRONTS on my 81.. Am I going to need to change the triple tree to do this? And what is the difference in the size of the rear axle? SORRY for the questions. this is the only close topic I have found as of yet. Thanks

Just finished a move so I don't have access to the bike right now but I don't think there was much change for the rear rim. The front required the trees, forks and rim. On my bikes just used what the PO left me and then still had to figure out what I had.
