I recently got a 1980 XS650. I have been having problems with it slipping out of 2nd 3rd 4th gear. It usually happens when I shift into second. It will start going and just slipping and rev high. Its happened a couple times in 3rd and 4th gear. I am new to these bikes and would really appreciate some help.
Thanks
Fox

Not sure if its still in gear. When it happens I have to shift up or down to get back into a gear. Dont think its the clutch slipping cause when I get on to gas all the power is there, when its in gear.

- a cause of gears jumping out is a weak shift drum stopper spring-can be seen in the top of this pic

- other causes can be shift forks worn, bent...gear dogs and receivers worn...bent or damaged shift arm or shift shaft...worn or broken gear teeth

^^^ its not too bad, i had to do it a few times to try and fix my girlfriend's starter. hardest part is keeping track of all the washers and spacers for the clutch basket.

It's not a pain. Everything is really straightforward so just make sure you use the correct Phillips head on the clutch springs and a proper basket holder.

My bike would slip out of gear when I first brought it home last year, much in the same manner that you describe. I was able to replace the spring in this picture without tearing off my clutch basket. Use a pair of needle nose pliers and a lot of patients. :banghead:

Take the old one to a good hardware store. look through there springs. Find one with the same size wire, number of turns, length and diameter as the old one.

Ok. I had this same problem, I fixed the spring. I really didn't have to take the clutch basket off. However I did remove the clutch plates. But I put them back the same exact way. So here my problem now. The clutch cable come out of adjustment when I removed the plates "I believe". I went and tried to adjust the cable back and it's got to much slop. Not sure why? I adjusted it according to the book stcrew bottomed out, and then backed out 1/4 turn. It's almost like the clutch is engaged all the time. Thoughts on what I could have screwed up? Thx!!

Did you align the pressure plate correctly when you reinstalled it? There's a dot on one of the hub teeth that needs to show through a little hole in the pressure plate .....
