I'm in the process of breaking in my engine right now and have followed the process I saw in another thread:
found an empty highway and did 35-50 mph cycles for the first 50 miles (changed oil, cleaned filters, cleaned magnets, retorqued head [wasn't loose prob because of copper washers])
The next 60 miles was a mix of highway and city and then I repeated the above maintenance procedure
I now have ~150 miles on it and am wondering if i can stop worrying about riding a constant ~60 mph on the highway or should i still vary my speed every so often?

Thank you

At this point with the head holding torque, then it should be fine. I wouldn't push it real hard till after about 500 miles.

You guys really dont need to go nuts with the break in period like garyr said. For a small low horse power vehicle like our bikes, a few good pulls and a few heat cycles should be plenty. Ive build fully forged race motors in a couple past cars i had, i normally went about 250 miles with low boost, changed the oil, then beat the shit out of it! Dont over think it, the main thing you want to do is vary the rpm range, dont keep it at 3000 for an hour ya know? I just finished a full engine rebuild on my xs on thursday, i let it idle for about 30 min, ill go on a ride tomorrow probably 100 miles or so, and ill just drive it normal. Good luck!

If your breaking in just rings I have heard the first 50-100 miles are what counts. I just vary the rpm's and do a few rollons to seat the rings. I would not keep the speed/RPM's at a constant. New transmissions would be another story but I would say most of out 30-40 year old bike transmissions are broken in.

Maybe I just need to go for a ride and then check the head torque. The only other thing on my list is to try and play with the main jetting. So now I need to figure out how to determine what size mains will work best. The bike already starts and ideals well it just need a little more in the top end.
