78 "Simple is clean" Bratstyle Build

nakata1.JPG

What's funny is that I see so many American's calling this style "Bratstyle" and the Japanese just call it a chopper. That's all it is really...a swingarm chopper.

You sure you wanna do a Sportster tank? That's a pretty common look...

Well, since I've been working on the bike for about a year now, and I bought the tank, welded bungs to the frame for the tank, painted the frame, mounted the tank, plumbed the tank and filled it with gas. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I want to go with a sportster tank.

Even though I did chop many parts off of this bike, I wouldn't call it a chopper. I would call it a Bobber though. Since its not a hard tail I can't call it a hard tail bobber. It does still have rear shocks and is mininmalistic like a brat bike. So, I'm gonna go ahead and say its a brat "style" bobber.

American, Japanese, who cares?

Also I reckon the sporty tank is all good. It looks good and it works. I'd say it only seems common on these forums. Driving around day to day I doubt you will see too many other XS650's with sporty tanks...

How are you planning on mounting the fender fasmtng? Im mulling that one over myself...

Wherearewe:
I'm thinking ill weld two tabs to the swing arm up front and bolt it there. Then use simple fender struts mounted to the rear of the fender and to the rear of the swing arm near where the axle goes through. I believe there is already a threaded hole there. My main goal with the fender is to mount it as close to the tire as possible.

How far along are you with your build? I'd like to see some some pics

I agree about the sporty tank. There's a reason its so common, it looks good. I've only seen one other xs650 in my area and it was a very nice cafe build.

Its not as far a long as yours. I have to work around job, wife, 3 year old child... also being in NZ i have to ship basically everything so its slow and expensive.:banghead: None of the paint is done, still plan to lower front forks, add rear fender and have ordered some Gordon Scott custom pipes...
With the rear fender i really wanted to avoid struts and do something really short and compact: just the finish the lines of the bike more than anything. I saw a Deus Harley with a similar idea and it looked pretty sharp.

Info on this build? Particularly the seat.

You might check bratstyle.com. It looks like one of their builds. Good luck shopping on their site. Most of it is in Japanese.

Only reason I mentioned the commonality of the Sportster tank is because everyone says how awesome the Bratstyle, Heiwa, and Motoshop bikes are...and guess what? You don't see too many Sportster tanks in their builds.

You showed a picture of another tank in this thread that looks way more original than the Sportster tank.

Its been a little while since I've posted anything new here. Here are some more photos of the build
