Hydraulic clutch option possibility

It looks a lot like the unit Hugh sells. It is a lot cheaper, but it is hard to tell if it is "apples to apples" b/c it might be lesser quality.

Holy shit. That is the exact same thing. Has to be. No coincidence the MC and slave match Hughs. Seen here too except with red MC: http://www.bestdirtparts.com/product_info.php?products_id=33

And here I paid $130 :D

Edit: Okay, maybe a couple differences but I'm pretty sure it's same

Heck, even the hose with the black rubber thingy is the same.

Someone should give these a try, it would make it easier on us :) Seriously, we can't keep them in stock long enough, and our suppliers are not really up to par on keeping us supplied with inventory.... These things have been ALOT of work for us to keep in stock, assemble, etc... If this would work, I'd much rather see you guys using what is available, and at a killer price too :yikes:

Edit* I just looked closer, and they are almost identical. I'm willing to be these would work for you folks. :bike::thumbsup:

BTW, this eBay seller was selling them way back since November 2011. Hugh didn't make his available until mid-March 2012.
Had I know that I would've had my HC sooner, no disrespect to Hugh

I'm not certain but I think you're going to find the hose on the pit bike clutch to be too short. Perhaps Hugh could just sell hoses made up?

PS. I just grabbed Hugh's out of the box and looked at it. I'm certain the hose on Hugh's kit is roughly 12" longer. Other than that they appear the same.

It says 34" hose is supplied, but any good hose shop should be able to make a longer one for you... That hose will definitely be too short for an XS...

I just ordered a set from that shop as well, I want to compare for you folks  Hose length, slave rod length and throw will all need to be proper, but I can't see anything from the pics that really defines these as being that much different from what our suppliers have been getting us... I'd gladly tell folks to use these instead of ours if they work the same, because these have been very frustrating to keep in stock, assemble, etc... :bike: As always, I just prefer to see folks out and about on these old bikes...

hugh, what length hose do you supply with your kits?

Absolutely no disrespect to Hugh he's the one that laid the ground work for this. I'm sure he has a box full of attempts that didn't work so well. I know I've been there and done that when on various projects.

You folks are too kind... I do have a box full of "Nope, that won't work" and about a year and half of testing and tweaking parts to make things work.... But, if this ends up cost effective for the masses, then I'm all for it

first i would like to say that is the same as hughs. Second the reason why its soo cheap is beacuse its a POS just like hughs. Dont buy this thing unless you are looking for a cheap fix that wont last long.

You wanna back that up with facts cowboy?

Welp, I've had my HC from Hughs installed for about 3 months now. Zero problems so far and clutch performance is still better than ever :wink2:

I think the Lyme disease has gotten the better of him. :yikes:

Allow me to begin by saying that I was one of the people that requested that Hugh make such a product available over a year before Hugh began selling them.

On the day mine arrived I recognized it was the same parts as was being used on pit bikes. At first I was upset (hurt even) but I discussed it privately with my business partners (one Hugh has met) and we all agreed that Hugh had taken the financial risk and done the R&D to be sure this assembly would work and that we should wait and see if Hugh stands behind this product as well as he's stood behind every other product he's sold.

Sure enough, I'm proud to say Hugh did just that.

As to how long it will last? Is it a POS? I don't know but it's cheap enough to repair and easy to get. I don't like all this Chinese crap flooding the market either but it's here and we're stuck with it for now like it or not. Even Harley-Davidson engines are made in China now-- what are we to do?

Now Hugh not only tells us it appears to be the same as his, he gives up the hose length and tells us that ANY local hose company can make the hoses for us. How many manufacturers and distributors tell you how to buy their stuff cheaper than they can or will sell it to you?

Hugh, this old 1% may be retired from all the BS but I'll always have your back. You've earned it in my book.

Thanks Bill

Seriously though, when I started doing research for the Hydraulic Clutch Conversion, I looked at every possible part and component I could find to make a kit work. Magura would have been way too $$$$, and some of the other component simply would not work well together. I tried OEM slave cylinders that required machining to the side cover to work, and then found I could not source new Slave Cylinders at a reasonable cost or in high quantity to try and assemble a kit. A bit over a year and a half went into finding a kit that would work properly, and be reasonably cost effective for the XS650 Market. The nice thing, is that this could easily be reversed, making it easy to go back to an original setup should someone choose to do so.

I bought every single 7/8 Clutch Master Cylinder I could get ahold of, tested each one to see if I could get the proper travel, with various combinations of slave cylinders. You should see the box of clutch components I went through...:doh:

The company listed above has a very similar setup originally listed at $95.00 - (Now marked down of course on the site) setup for a pit bike. I can't say that it is exactly the same yet, but I did order one just to confirm.

But Bill is correct, I'm probably a bad businessman, because I give away too many secrets, tips, tricks and tech that I could just horde and keep to myself to make some money. I'd rather see these old bikes back on the road, and people working in the shop/garage/front porch/kitchen having fun with their old bikes. :bike:

And yes, if this comes in, and I can see that is is the same stuff we are selling, then I'll gladly pass the information along and let people source the parts themselves. The kit above is cheaper than we are sourcing the parts for as of now, so it's a pretty good deal

^ +1000. I've been around a long, long time and I can tell you from experience that you'll be hard put to find a guy more stand-up than Hugh. Anyone who's just been here long enough to just read this thread can tell that. For GBGRIDER to post an entry to this thread like he did without any explanation is wrong in so many ways. Cowardly, even. Yep, I said that. I should prolly shut up now, so I will.
