wont rev past 5000 rpm

Does the exhaust flow, put a standard looking system on mine the other day, it just would not rev, put my free flow 2-1 on it and it's a differant bike.

I am having this same problem, bought my 83 special with 7k miles on it. It does not rev passed 5k without falling on its face.

I am running cheap pod filters (what came on the bike)
factory unmolestered exhaust.

Something to ponder from the carb guide.
My present bike is a 78, but the carbs were questionable. I inherited an 80 model from a friend that got killed. The carbs were in good shape. I cleaned them up, adjusted the mixture screws out 2 1/2 turns, installed new bowl gaskets, and needle & seats, and adjusted the floats like I used to on my Old 81 which had plastic floats.
According to the carb guide the settings are different on the brass floats
I hadn't seen this information anywhere else.
My BS-34s are stock. I adjusted the floats at 22 mm. I have brass floats. My old 81 model had the plastic floats. It starts 1st kick, idles great, and runs strong below 5,000 rpm. At 5000 it seems to run out of gas. I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds like I really am running out of gas around 5000 rpm.

For early BS34 carbs with brass floats, a float height of 27.3 mm. +/-1 mm. is specified.
For later units with plastic floats, 22 mm. +/-1mm. is given.

5twins went to some trouble to collect the info from tech bulletins.
As the one with the '80 carb schematic pictured.
