How simular are the CDI boxes for the yamaha. will an 80 or lets say an 85 work with a 81? Where can I buy one other than ebay? (inexpensive I can buy now for about $170)

Any diagrams as to how it works, can I build one?

thanks,

levan

I dont know off hand but in the long run it will probably be cheaper to switch to mikes pamco ignition. also keep in mind that the coils are 29 years old and probably weak to say the least and will need replacing. I prefer the stock system but wouldnt replace the ignition module unless i had one on the shelf.

From what I see on the parts fiche, 80-82 are the same. 83 is different. New from yamaha about 500 smackers. Try Ricks Electrics. I think they are in Vermont. they might have a after market, or K&L supply in CA. But you will have to find a shop that sells their stuff(K&L).

The difference in the 80-81 vs the 82 is the extra black wire for the side stand/clutch relay. Just cap it off.

If you have an 85 TCI box, It didn't come from an XS650. They quit building them in 82 or 83. The TCI box from some other model probably won't work.
