CDI Ignition

Hey guys,

Just about to order a PAMCO but i don't know which one... how do i know if i have CDI ignition or not?

It's a 1980 xs650 Special
i believe it was delievered to australia from the factory.

Aussie bikes had points. 1980SG 3W6-000101. If you have 3W6 on the compliance plate on the frame head you have points

look under the chrome covers on the head, left side has the points and the right has the advance weights.

when you buy the pamco you don't have to buy the kits with the advance weights /shaft


Part #14-0901.......Part #14-0911, (ultimate high output coil),........and buy the iridium plugs separate Part #50-5944 and save $7.00

And they had a TCi not CDi ignition

The first 3 numbers on my Compliance plate is 5A9... what does that mean????

Last of the Australian model 5A9 1981SH. I was looking on the 650 club site and saw the bike you bought and noticed you have the 81SH. They have the Drum mag rear brake instead of the disk. Straight swap if you want to put spoke wheels on it. Still a points model

If you have points you will have an advance unit. Did you look under the covers. Again the Aussie 80-3W6 and 81-5A9 did not come out with the factory electronic ignition system. If you have the TCI, (and it is a TCI not CDI), unit then it has been added to the bike or the motor is an American import. Do the engine numbers match the frame no's

Could you please tell me if i need the

Pamco Ultimate High Output - (1973-84 650's) Part #14-0914

or the

Pamco Ultimate High Output + New Advance Assembly. (1973-84 XS650's)
Part #14-0915
 
Yeah, just get the pamco. You already have the advance mech. When you do it, keep your old points and coils safely tucked away. If you ever fry the pamco, at least you can get it up and running again while you wait. cheers

You can get either one. Your bike has points so you don't really need to get the more expensive kit with all the advance parts.

thanks guys, i got very nervous for a second there...

Yamaman, is there many people in Perth that know much about these bikes and is there many people that have these bike???
 
Just like all old shit, fewer and fewer. Still they sold a lot of these back in the day, any bike mechanic over 50 will remember them well. Steve Riley (used to be the Midland Yamaha dealer) at midland huskvarna, i cant recall the name of the shop. He knows them well and also owns one. He may be of use to you at some stage. I have a couple of other sources, so if you find yourself in need of anything in particular, feel free to ask. cheers

if you go back to my first post, second on the page, i posted the part no's for you.

In your forth post you look to be quoting from a ID chart and it is wrong about the 5A9 having an electronic ignition, yes they written it has a CDi but that is wrong also, anyhow it doesn't apply to your bike
