End of the world...

4 miles an hour is easy, 4 hours a day = 20 miles, 5 days 100 miles, 60 days/2months 1,000 miles. That's without vehicles. The gangs will stay put till the supermarket shelves are empty then they they will roam.

Look how fast things deteriorated in new Orleans

The good won't be saved, who will define what is good, Trust will be lost and in a lawless society the urban bad guys will have there own laws about good and bad.

Empathy is the core value of Humans and that stops us from completely annihilating our selves

Good thing I live in a flat state that is more than half agriculture. And I get along with my neighbors, who have some long range people thumpers. Nice being able to see 1,000 yards in all directions.

The water situation in the cities will be a nightmare. Once the sewers backup and no water pumps, due to power loss, all the water will be contaminated.
Don't forget about the people who need daily meds and are terminally ill. They won't last long.
However, the disease spreading through the masses will quickly turn everyone against each other. People will be so paranoid that invisible death is creeping into their perimeter that it will be "Stick first, talk later", because they took our guns.

I think we have been hit at least 5 times before in history with asteroids that have been game changers.
jefft

There's a great book called "One Second After", It takes place in a small mtn town near Ashevile, NC after the nation is shut down by an EMP strike. Written by an ex military man and shows day by day how quickly things can go south when life is no longer "normal". Great read, you wont want to put it down.

+1, and a very believable scenario. Could easily happen exactly as portrayed. Scary.

Now the media has moved from Doomsday to the Super Volcano in Yellowstone.
"National Media. Making up news and scaring people since the 1940's."

The Mayan thing was a joke. Yellowstone IS gonna blow. Of course it could blow next Monday or next Millennium.

Well they sure scared a LOT of people with that "Joke". Lets see, Hornady even came out with a "Zombie" ammunition and people hoarded food, bought tons of guns and built shelters. So who strikes the paranoia in people? Great joke.

A lot of people were smart enough to believe a civilization that couldn't predict their own demise was smart enough to predict the end of the world

As a whole we homo sapiens allow superstitions to control our thinking and as long as we do, then people will be gullible enough to fall for these sorts of things because they want to believe it.

Archeology has proven that our biggest threat to us is our selves, over population and the destruction of our environment and droughts, (some natural and man made), has destroyed civilizations in the past. There were areas they could move to to start again but today there is no where to move to, we are polluting our artesian water, diverting what water there is for crops and killing the fauna and flora where the water used to run, Cutting down the forests that keep the ground cool and was a home to animals that die out as a direct consequence, (no more game to kill), and creates dust bowls that blow away the top soil that grows our crops.

The earth has enough land to sustain 10 Billion people at its optimum. From 1960-1998, In that 38 years, we went from 3.04 B to 5.96 B, doubling our population averaging a billion every 12.7 years. In the last 13 years to 2011 we have increase by another billion to 6.97 B.

Our govt encouraged us to get out there and have 3 children, 1 for mum,1 for dad and one for the country, because we were not growing enough to meet the demands of our growth that an expanding economy demands. Our population had a marked increase in the years following, we were also encouraged by a $5,000 bonus from the govt for every child born.

Now the threat of the Mayan calender has passed, the panic buyers and doomsday advocates will go back to their video games and listen to the shock jocks on the way to work in their mundane lives, and not give thought to any of this because they don't want to believe that we could do this to ourselves, but are prepared to believe that an ancient civilization for told the instantaneous end to our life as we know it.

We are a pretty ignorant lot as a whole.

Any how i got to go to bed now so i can get up tomorrow and read about how the multinationals are looking after my shares and me so i can prosper and contribute to the never ending circle of endless growth that drives our economy and at the same time destroys the earth under my feet.

Number one reason I have no children. I do not want them to have to grow up and inherit the mess we made. It's unfair. Man, the children that are 1 and 2 years old right now. Life is gonna suck when they are my age. Estimated 9.5 billion by 2060. Also the year Issac Newton predicts the end of the world. I don't believe it, but some people will. I believe more in our own demise from destroying our natural resources.

I wrote a paper in college about this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Pacific_Garbage_Patch

Yet, not too many people know it's there.

Funny how similar humans are to locust. Eat, breed, destroy, move, eat, breed, destroy, move.

I meant "joke" in the sense that it had no basis in fact. Like the WMD story spun-up as a pretext for the Iraq war this joke was put to use for a less than admirable purpose
