UK Bobber Build thread

I got a little more done today - Got the fuel lines fathomed out and fitted up, I will order some spring clips, although the fuel pipes are pretty tight - we wouldnt want one popping off. Main thing - no leaks and good fuel flow

Had a little issue with the electrics - Randomly the headlight would blow a fuse?? So with my intrepid multi meter, we tracked the fault down to being the tiny lamp in the speedo. During transit the holder had popped of its clip inside and was dangling next to the casing, earthing itself when it felt like it or the bike moved - little bastard :D

Once that was put to bed I ran the bike again a few times (note the blued pipes :D:D:D) It seems to want a bit of choke to keep running, however I am not too bothered at present - I need to order new diaphragms for the carbs and they'll need re-jetting, setting up properly etc etc. All I wanted to do was to ensure it ran, before I started on the engine tear down.

I had the same problem with the speedo bulb in my old GS750 chop, at the time though I seriously regretted wiring it as simply as I could only using one fuse as it took bloody ages to track the problem down!!!

Ant it still around 0 out side that cold be y or choke needs to b on a bit lol it got up to 30 today so happy it's been about 8 and then the wind blue it was -14 it sucks so much and I gotto work out in the cold

Thats a nasty little problem with the speedo bulb.. top stuff tracking it down.. i have seen this same problem three times with the old bmw bikes that used to come into the shop.. real headache the first two times.. now do a sneeky check straight up.

Looks like a great build you have going on here, look forward to following the progress and seeing the end result.

Good to see that you are moving along.
Electrical problems are a Royal Pain!
A bulb in the speedo wow
So You are goin to pull the engine apart?
If so what are You going to do to it?
I'm going to pull mine back apart.
I getting a head job  did I just say that:doh:
I mean I getting a valve job and and fixin the oil leaks.
Keep up the good work!

Hi,

Yep, engine out and nut and bolt rebuild. I'm not going to do much to it other than replace seals, guides, gaskets and anything else I find thats worn or wonky. On top, it's going to get the cases blasted and the left and right covers polished. It'll be all bare alluminium when its finished.

For this weekend, including tomorrow (Im taking the day of :) )
I am going to redo the rear brake hub stay as the one I got carried away machining is just not man enough and will no snap in time.
The triple trees need cutting down and the redundant bosses etc removing so i will no doubt do that.
I'll probably try some new fuel in it and see if I can get the carbs right before I take them off for strip down.
And whatever else I come across :)

So, a little further down the road today:
Unbelievable the diaphragms I ordered on Saturday evening from JBM Industries arrived today!! Interesting to note that other items ordered from the UK at the same time still havent turned up!
With these in hand, I decided to finish off the carbs, fuel lines and get the timing set properly, with a view to get her running better.

So old diaphragms off, new ones on

Thanks Carbon,

I am really pleased with the note of the exhausts, so thanks for your comments.
I am now content that the carbs are spot on and the timing is correct before i strip down the engine. So, just a few more bits and bobs to do before i'll be breaking it down for powder coat and starting on the engine! First though if the weather is good tomorrow I ll take her outside and have a little pootle round the yard!! :D

Good for you Paul! She sounds good.:thumbsup:Hell yeah,Take her outside man.Careful with the snow/ice!:D Did the diaphragms give you any trouble?

Sounds great and looks great don't teass yr self with a ride around the yard ul still have to wate till it gets nice out lol if that ever happens over there ❄ ☔lol

Hi John, I think the ride around the yard is out - a lovely dump of snow last night! The diaphragms were so simple! Well worth it!

Sub, thanks for the comments, yeah I know, looking out the window now, not for a while yet :)
