:winkHi all I have a leaky petcock and does any one know how to fix them.I already ordered a new seal kit but it did ent fit where can I order kits from cheers

there is a how to on rebuilding petcocks in the tech section . You probably just need some gaskets and O rings. The stock ones are much better than the aftermarket , some of them leak when new.

You still have the vacuum petcocks?
If leaking off the front.
It could be the wavy washer caught under the face plate.
It could be the isolater washer under the selecter.
If off the plastic spacer plate the inside diaphram. The is a hole designed to bleed when this happens. If doing the "kit" to repair these make sure the bleeder hole points down.
If out the vacuum hose the rear diaphram is wholey and it could be putting gas in the motor.
Repair kits seldom work for me. I don't think the coil spring that closes it is strong enough after 30 yrs. and they don't supply new ones in the kit. Streaching the spring hasn't worked for me. Or it could be the face of the valve(the part that seals with the o-ring) is dirty? The o-ring isn't the right size?
You may want to look at Mikes manual replacements.
Earlier model ones won't work. Bolt pattern is different. Or the height is different.

The '78s were a one-year-only petcock style. The rebuild kits for the later vacuum units don't fit in them. You must be sure to get the right kit (as you've discovered).

You should inspect the back side of the arm, the round "disc" area that actually does the sealing against the 4 holed rubber washer or gasket. Work it against some 600 paper taped to a flat surface (I use a piece of glass) in a circular pattern to clean and smooth it. Using a small sharp knife, "break" the edges on all the little "flow" holes in the disc. Sharp edges here will tear the rubber disc as you turn the lever.

Thanks 5twins! I had a couple of old kits I tried in newer petcocks.
Not knowing the difference I didn't pay attention to numbers nor compare.
I wonder if Shanes and I need to do some swapping.
Any right off the bat difference that I can see/feel?
Not that I'm too lazy to look but........

The tank to petcock o-ring differs between early manual units, the '78s, and the '79-on units. It's obvious just looking at them if you have them side by side. The 4-hole rubber disc is also a different size. Again, obvious if compared side by side. Rebuild kits can work but not in every single instance. Sometimes the petcock is worn or damaged internally and new rubber just won't help. If the petcock sat for a long time with fuel residue and gum in it, that can take it's toll, eating away at the inner sealing surfaces. They get all pitted and sometimes can't be rescued.

The other surface you need to inspect is the hole in the backside of the petcock that the vacuum powered plunger w/ o-ring fits into. It has a bevel at the top that the o-ring on the plunger wedges into and seals against. That may need some cleaning and polishing.
