I dropped a #%^*#%# retaining clip!

I was installing pistons (without anything over the opening below, dammit!) when I dropped one of the retaining clips. It fell straight down past the crank. My question is can I remove the clip by removing the oil sump? I hope I don't have to open the cases again. :doh:

Yep you should be able to pop the sump plate, or get one of those extendy magnet thingys had do a sweep round and it should pick it up

remove the sump first but may have to turn the engine upside down

Yep. Removed the sump and the clip was snuggled right up to the filter's magnet. Whew! Thanks for the replies!

I'm sure he will not do that again
what I used to hate was the ford oil pump drive shaft that ran off the bottom of the distributor.
You would pull the distributor that damn shaft sometimes would come out and drop into the crankcase.
Oh what fun!

Here's a simple way to eliminate the possibility of dropping things into the engine. Pistons pre-installed in the cylinders, and then install the pistons/cylinders combo horizontally.

I just used emery paper, starting at about 200 and worked up to 1200. Finish off with "Autosol" polish.

Lots of elbow grease! Once you bring the finish up to a high level, its quite easy to maintain it, with "Autosol".
