Would someone please explain how the retard feature works on the new easy advancer Pamco electronic ignition kit. Thanks...

that gives me the jist of it, however, I have one other question:
Since it has a built in REV limit of 3000 rpm, & the retard feature, does this also help with over advancing & keeping me from holing a piston?

Running the carbs to lean will hole the pistons.

Timing, to much advance/retard, will make it hard to start or backfire, and can cause pre-ignition, or pinking as some call it

I don't think it has a rev limiter. If it did it wouldn't be 3000 rpms. The full advance occurs at 3000 rpms. This isn't a rev limiter. This is just where the advancer reaches full advance.
A rev limiter kills the ignition if the engine rpms exceed a preset rpms. Usually at the highest rpms the engine can safely run at. In the XS650 that will be around 7500 to 8000 rpms.
