At what degree should I set my timing light for my XS-650 bike?
Thanks for your assistance...

If you have a timing light with an adjustment you spent way to much money on a light. Set the setting to Zero.

I checked my Pamco ignition with timing gun. Rotor is nowhere between firing marks.
Pamco is adjusted to the end of slot, & can't adjust it anywhere else. However, that is
where bike starts & runs ok in that position. Confused... Any advice?? Thanks.

jo jo,

you need to be more specific. What model and year is your bike? Which model PAMCO do you have? Does your timing light have a preset? If so, did you read XSleos suggestion to just set it to Z-E-R-O ?

Hi Pamco, I have a 78fo model and the 60degree pamco with new electric advancer, its all the way retarded and I set this timing light to 0 and its still 20 degree's from the center of the f. My timing gun is used...

jo jo,

OK. We have had some cases where the advancer replacement was either not installed properly or it shifted and moved the timing. Please check the installation instructions again and reinstall the copper cap accordingly.

Secondly, the E-Advancer may require you to adjust the sensor plate slightly advanced from the legacy PAMCO, so when you say it is retarded, which way are you referring to? Advanced would be clockwise, retarded is counterclockwise.

Here is a picture of a typical position of the plate with the E-Advancer:

If it's retarded, as in all the way ccw. It could be your timing chain is worn.
As the chain wears, it gets longer. This extra length between the sprockets on the front side lets the cam be retarded. If the cam is retarded the timing will be too.
One way to easily check for can chain wear is to put the timing marks at TDC and look at the pin the copper cap rests on. It should point straight up or down.
As you look at that end of the cam, the more the pin is toward the rear, the more the timing chain is worn.
On my 75 my chain was worn enough so I had to set my timing as you are doing. With the points plate I even filed the area under the screws so I could go farther.
It ran ok but not as well as it did with a new chain.

Ok,cap looks good in notch, yes the plate is all the way counterclockwise. Did it get thrown out of time,is my ground bad,the instructions say if the ground is not good you can't time the bike, right?

Xsleo, im gonna do that now ,I feel that's it,this top end has never been overhauled . If I titen the cam chain that could fix it ,right?

Maybe. If your cam chain is very loose it can act the same way. Follow the procedure in your repair manual.
Over tight is as bad if not worse than too loose.

Hi pamco, that was it,the copper advance replacement shifted and the center of the advance replacement is damaged now, can I buy a replacement? Thank you.

There is a new design cap made from billet aluminum which wil be avail in about a week. I am waiting for those to replace the copper cap and you will get one.

Excuse me for interrupting this thread. Pete I have sent you a couple emails, got no response.
