having an issue with smoke coming out of my left tail pipe, I'm running pod filters with cut off pipes the pipes do not have baffles

smokes a little at idle and when I give it gas its smokes like it's on fire, could it be that my piston rings are bad?

there is another issue with the RPM's climbing at idle like the throttle is full open thanks for any help

Could be the head gasket is passing oil from the camchain tunnel. How many miles/kms are on the engine? Have you checked the torque on the head studs?

Thats strange - I've got smoke coming out of my right pipe
My bike starts up & runs ok - NO smoke - until it gets nice & warm then it starts...... :wtf:
I think I've narrowed it down to the old set of 2:2 megas I've just fitted - the stuffings is blowing out and its a bit oily. But it didn't do it today when I tried it out. As I've only recently got it I haven't actually ridden it on the road yet :bike:

What colour is the smoke - Blue / white / black

Check for blackness/oiliness on the plugs. If clean, could be exhaust guide/seals.
Do a compression check. If low, probably rings. If not, maybe intake guide/seals.

There's been a rash of "left cylinder smoking" threads lately. Could try a search on "smoking" or "smoke". Most of these require teardowns...

So cleaning and rejetting carbs helped make the bike run smoother but the left side seems to be running cooler then the right and when I cover the right carb the bike dies but if I cover the left carb the bike keeps running , could this mean a bad coil ?

Cooler than the right? Then you should check the left plug for oiling up and not firing on every stroke it should do - or at all. When idling remove the left suppressor cap. If it makes no difference you are only firing on the right cylinder.

TwoMany is right, read the 'smoking' threads and look for your symptoms.

I've read of quite a few cases of this being due to sticking advance weights :wink2: but its also recommended to check there isn't an air leak on the intake manifolds and the diaphrams are ok.

Morgue13 - look at that, expert advice from all around. There is nothing that can't be solved with such help on hand.

More info needed - what charging system have you got - what type and year carbs (not necessarily matching the bike), and what work has been done recently on the engine?
