So somewhere in the life of my '76 XS650C a PO switched the kick stand to one from another year, or maybe even another bike completely. It leans waaaay to far over for my comfort, even though it does it solidly. I have looked around for a '76 stand to replace it, but I'm not sure they are correct as I can't find a part diagram with an illustration. Anyone got a picture I could use as a reference?

Thanks!

My bike does the same type of lean, in the habit of carrying a 2X4x3/4 scrap board in my jacket pocket to put under the the kickstand foot, especially helpful on soft parking lot tar.

You may have difficulty finding a '76 stand as it was a one year only part. From the parts diagram (which is anything but difficult to find) .....

..... and an actual pic .....

This differs from the '74-'75 version in that there is no piece of plate between the tang and foot for a rubber stopper. Also the location for the spring tab (and the spring length) differ .....

Pretty much any of these stands can be modded to remedy the excess lean by simply welding some steel plate to the bottom of the foot. I had to do that to my '78 stand to compensate for the longer rear shocks I installed .....

It would be good to determine what years and models side stands will interchange with, as I had issues with my '74 as well. The side stand that came on it appears to be the correct one, though the extension to lower it was broken off, and the webbing where the rubber bumper mounted was torn. And it also had the excessive lean issue.

I found a used stand allegedly for a '73-'74 TX750 that looked similar, and was listed as interchangeable with my 650 on boats.net. But- it swung way to far forward, and was unstable. So- I had a little block of steel welded to the stand as a travel limiter, and it worked out well but with one issue. The angle of the "foot" does not allow it to bear on the flat, more on the "heel". Fine on concrete or cold asphalt, but will need a board on any soft surface.

I can throw some pics of both stands and the mods and issues up later if folks are interested.

Use a welding torch to heat the side stand and bend it so the foot is flat on the ground. Heating and bending can help most hold the bike up better.
My 75 has a side stand off an 82 Seca. I had to heat and bend it a bit to work. It held the bike up a bit to upright.

So here is where the confusion comes in. And 5twins, this is why I posed the question. The illustrations you posted don't show the metal stopper that sticks out towards the front of the bike, and neither do some of the stands for sale I've found. But then I've also seen diagrams and parts for sale labeled "1976" that do show the metal tab (i.e. Carbon). I wanted to see which one was truly the 1976 kick stand.

My current stands height isn't bad, it's the angle it comes to rest at, way to far forward. The bend to the back in the one 5twins posted makes it look like the real deal. I may just go to a welder and get a block tacked on as you said Pat. Probably cheaper than buying the correct stand!

Thanks everyone for the input!

I'm not sure what that "stopper" you speak of is. The little nub on the front end of the frame mount stops the stand's forward rotation. Maybe yours is worn? Sidestands take a beating. You really shouldn't be kickstarting the bike on the sidestand but everybody does. But that doesn't make it right, lol.

The stand In my pic that I modded had no tang. I scored a complete original (pictured next to it) and was able to fab a new tang by copying that. I changed the angle and length slightly so the stand rests against the headpipe mount on the frame when in the up position instead of banging against the bottom of the engine. I see that all the time.

If you plan to replace it might be worthwhile to get a whole new one with an internal spring. Looks so much cleaner than the stock piece imho  Check out

I'm reading through this thread and haven't seen anyone mention what exactly their lean angle is. What is too much? What isn't enough?
Is everyone just eyeballing measurements or has anyone taken an angle finder tool and actually measured the angle that was "too much" and then measured "just right"?

Here's mine. I think the angle is ok (9 deg). Maybe it could be better.

So, what's the ideal angle to keep the bike the most stable?
