Any interest in another swingarm option for the XS650?

Hey guys, I am currently working on an aluminum race swing arm design for an SR500, however it shares very similar rear end dimensions with the XS. It can accept the Radian swing arm as a drop in mod just like the XS. XS stock swingarm is a bit longer I believe. Anyway I've been bored tonight and drawing up a new swingarm model. I plan on for sure making one of these for our current build, but if there's more interest or if people were interested in a monoshock conversion kit or a fatass back tire conversion kit those are also feasible options. Done it on two honda CB's in the last couple months already with great success.

I'm just trying to get a feel for the market right now on this so any input would be great. Would you be interested in a complete monoshock conversion kit for the XS650? Aluminum Race Singarm?

Throw some swingarm features you'd like to see offered out there!

Anyway here's my rough drafting so far. Let me know what you think. This is for a standard spring setup. Oh and that pic of the CB900 is the one we just made. Monoshock conversion, 280 rear tire, and the exhaust runs up through the swingarm...pretty rad!

Take it easy.

Yes I do. I've spent a while on their site. Seems to me their prices are a bit out there. I have some second hand experience with their products and found that much of it is great stuff, however there are some products they make that i've heard simply aren't up to par. No experience with their swingarms. My real issue with their stuff is the price, They ask a lot for some pretty simple stuff, not saying their products are sub par or aren't deserving of the price, most of it looks like great billet machine work! But I know for many keeping a build low cost is key and $70 each for fork dust caps, or $95 each for headlight ears is way out of the budget for many of us.

What I'm wondering though is if there's an interest out there for maybe a cheaper option, different features such as wide tire options, monoshock conversions. Stuff like that. Wouldn't be 'Merica without some competition ha.

Anyway folks like I said, Just trying to get a read on if there's any interest. If not we'll ditch the idea and just build em for our chops.

Love to hear some more feedback from the troops!

Like I said, we are just prospecting right now, but the goal would definitely be to provide a basic aluminum swingarm for under $350.00

Ok, hope it works out. For what it is worth, I would want the arm boxed around the rear axle vs the plates like on the one in the 3rd pic above.

Cheney Engineering makes swingarms, I had him make me one about two months ago for the flattrack bike Im building. Chromoly box tubing with axle and adjusters plus wheel spacers and swingarm bearings. $345 - 400.

I think your in the ballpark as far as price. Keep us posted.

I might be looking for one that is strecthed, 6"or so. How about a chrome moly version. 1 x 2 tubing with slide block inserts for the axle adjusters?

I'd have to talk to my materials people, but we've done Chrome Moly parts before so it certainly isn't out of the question. Different designs are also a possibility, we did a tubed one for a CB750.

I'm definitely thinking slide blocks on all the designs. I'd actually like to design up an axle adjuster that would be compatible with multiple swing arm options. I'll sit down today and see what I can come up with.

Thanks for the input guys. Any information as to what people want is quite useful.

I'm still curious as to whether people would be interested in a monoshock conversion kit. We have a potential hook up for compatible shocks and it wouldn't be any more difficult to swap swing arms and weld in the shock supports than doing a hardtail or cafe loop.

I'll keep this thread updated as things progress.

It sounds interesting. If I were to Spend $300-$325 on an aluminum Swingarm, I'd want the following features:

  • Specifiable Length, +25mm, +50mm, +100mm, etc (+$/mm)
  • Shock mount options, Clevis or Tab
  • Shock mount options, Length from Swingarm Pivot deviation from OEM
  • Comes with Swingarm Bushings, Bronze + Seals.
  • Roller Swingarm Bushing available as a $125 upgrade. Bearings, Pivot Tube, etc.
  • Comes with an Axle
  • Bracing options, Top or Bottom (for +$)
  • Drum or Disc mounting options, Including the Drag link (+$) for Drum setups and all hardware.
  • Wheel spacers included for OEM Drum or Disc wheels
  • Custom offsets for +$, still including Axle

If you make the price of entry affordable, you'll make more in upselling. But it's not a race for the bottom.

I'm definitely interested! A basic box-section aluminum arm is what I'd be looking for.

That's the idea right now. A base design that we can modify/expand on in the future to fit more diverse requests. My main issue with the current swingarm selection is both price and function. I figure a simple boxed aluminum swingarm for under $350 would be something some folks would be interested in, including myself. I've got the weekend off so my plan is to finish my dimensioning, send out the drafts for cutout and hopefully have a mocked up prototype in the coming weeks.

CD thanks for the info. Great stuff there! Obviously we're in the design stages still, but I like the requested upgrades and pricings you listed. It's very helpful to get a realistic idea of what people would expect/be willing to spend for certain aspects of this concept so thanks again for the post.
