Hello all! Some may recognise me, some may not. I built a XS back around 2006. As with a lot of yall. It had charging system issues. I bought new stuff from Mikes and still couldnt get it charging.
Once I got a hold of Tim Parrott he got me straigtened out. Well I have another XS and its not charging. Its a 1979 and after doing some research I have come up with several choices and would like the forum members that are familiars opinions of what direction to go in to make it a reliable charging system.
Should I send what I have to Tim Parrott Enterprise for rebuild?
or Buy the Hughs Hand built system?
or Buy the XS Charge.com system? Are there others Im not mentioning? Im not interested in the Banshee swap[. I want something that I can get shipped within a week. Siple install. And dead reliable. Not concirned with costs.
Whats the best charging system available right now?

A pma system is definitely the way to go, the system Hugh and xscharge both sell are the banshee swap systems sold as complete kits.

The great system from Hugh costs a few bucks more but he will give customer service above and beyond if you need it. tim

PMA sounds like the only option?

PMA is not the only option. I have been using the stock alternator for 7 years now, and it works great.

For your 1979, if you have a good stator and rotor, I recommend you buy a VR-115 regulator and either buy or make your own rectifier. You need to read up on how your stock system is supposed to work:

Common problems are brushes that are less than 3/8", and a rotor that does not measure 5 to 6 ohms.

I agree with RG, the stock system is a good one. It works just fine. It does take a bit more maintenance than a PMA, the brushes wear and need replacement.
The only real advantage of a PMA is the ability to run without a battery.

Replacing 45-28 year old brushed electronics is a positive.

That is relative to the quality of the replacement parts.

Before it became a commercial alternative charging system for the XS. The PMA/Banshee was taken from other bikes. The winding wire was thicker and the resin was used way more liberally than the ones that are produced and sold by Hugh or Mikes, (Chinese mass produced).

Looking at a blow up of one of the PMA's that is sold that every one recommends shows poor windings and very little resin.

How long these Chinese built PMA's will last is yet to be determined.

I am not condemning Hugh or Mikes merely stating; I think the new pma's that are sold today have yet to prove themselves as a superior replacement that won't brake down. A lot of hype without substance

How many new vehicles come with generators, instead of alternators?

Cars and trucks only used DC generators up until about 1970. Around 1970, they changed over to AC alternators, and have used them up to to-day. The stock XS650 used the electromagnet rotor with brushes, AC alternator, just the same as cars and trucks.

So, to answer your question...................none.
