What's the regular chain length for a '78 Special? I bought a new chain but it has too many links and I want to cut it down to the right size. It's a 530 o-ring chain. Also, I thought the chain came with a master link but it didn't. Where's the best place to get a rivet-type o-ring master link? Do dealers sell them and if so, will I pay an arm and a leg for one?

- 17 x 34 @ 104, 5/8 x 3/8, you can get a rivet or clip type joiner...just about any bike shop should be able to provide this

- pitch and width[between plates]

- pitch is the same, width is different
- nominal dimensions:
- width

520 = 1/4" - (0.25") - [6.35mm]

530 = 3/8" - (0.38") - [9.52mm]

- pitch..*both chains, standard #50 - 5/8" - (0.625") - [15.88mm]

- a 520 chain and sprocket set - same pitch, narrower than a 530, reasonable weight saving

Your chain should have came with at least the rivet type link. You might be able to get a clip style link locally. You will need to get one made by the same people that made your chain. Different makers use different diameter and lenght pins.
One from a DID won't work with a Tsubaki. As an example.
