weird engine issue dies at higher speeds

it acts like it just loses spark but with a continuity tester on the ignition it while running till it dies it doesnt seem to lose spark its hard to figure out.

I am thinking this issue is a grounding issue, I realized from another thread that I put the ground wire for the motor in the wrong place, my father in law thought it went under a head bolt and now that i think that is a crappy place since there is a rubber washer type thinger there and it goes on the right forward mount bolt instead. I cannot wait till i get to the shop tomorrow morning and redo the grounds and check all the other grounds to be sure, the frame also has a fresh powder coat job so I am sure this is the problem, if not I will go back to banging my head against it till it runs proper, thanks to all so far for great advice.

When I got my '71, initially all I did was clean the carbs, new battery and plugs. First test ride made it 'bout 5 miles...dead. Back at the shop I found a broken ground on the rectifier:doh:. Fixed it and rode for nearly 3 years before the teardown.

Fix them grounds!

after all the testing and putting the grounds in the proper place still no go so we tested the final thing the pickup coils and they are bad. do they not make these anymore the stator assembly on mikesxs doesnt even seem to include it, and i cant find a site with them. though i did find someone with some on the classifieds here i just wanted to verify they are out of production before i go with a used part.

Just looked over at partzilla.com and if you are talking about the pickup coil for the stock TCI ignition they are showing obsolete. Your best bet is to find a good used one or swap over to a pamco ignition, although that will be more cost and work in the immediate future it should eliminate alot of headaches later.

yeah once i start this new job next week i can afford the pamco/pma solution but for now i just need reliable transportation to get to this job. so i will go with this used one for 35 bux that seems reasonable

ok got the pickup coil replaced it tested out at 798 ohms both coils put it on but same problem persists where it will pretty much idle fine but after giving it some throttle it just dies both cylinders same time. the only part of the electrical we did not replace is the stator assembly, could that be causing this. I also checked the run/stop switch to make sure that was not malfunctioning and all conections are tight and proper. I am at my wits end with this project as I have already started my new job but i do not have my own transportation to get to work after this week i may not have a reliable ride to work. new plugs and new plug wires as well on this. the rotor i got i was told it would reliably work on this bike but after seeing some other comments and threads about the magnets not being proper on brand new rotors not sure if that is what is causing this problem. i am not sure if my father in law still has my old rotor lying around but i do know for a fact the old one is bad.

yeah the vac hose is brand new and connected properly fuel does get to the engine just file it is losing spark it seems somehow, not sure if it is the stator or the rotor which is brand new.

what is the solution if the new rotor is too thick? i am clueless now as i replaced the pickup and having same problem. I can kick it fine on the 2nd or 3rd kick but the electric start never fires it off either. if that is any help. the bike will start up when kicked and will idle pretty much ok but after giving it some good throttle it will just up and die like it lost all spark. i also notice while idling the volts read from battery at 12.8 which is far from what it was doing before. this issue is so grrr. replaced the rotor with one from amazon, the rec/reg is from mikesxs tried 2 different ignitions that both test as working. new plugs, new plug wires and caps, pickup was replaced. stator tests ok but still unsure totally. the slap test for the rotor/stator is still not all that strong it does pull the metal towards it using a thin feelers gauge but it doesnt actually slap the case. all relays were tested and ok all wiring tested and ok, voltage regulator was not tested im not sure how to do that one. the keyswitch was tested and is kind of iffy we bypased that with a toggle switch between a wire from the battery positive and the positive brush on the stator. the run/stop switch was rebuilt to be sure that was not causing an issue. motor/carbs both rebuilt. petcock/vac line good so it is getting fuel just fine, also ran in prime position with same problem. if i am missing something to test please let me know. that is all i have done so far. oh yeah also brand new battery 2nd one just to be sure.
