Picked up this nice clean original XS650 from Randy at Cedar Rapids Iowa.
Just getting it ready for its long trip back to Australia to join the rest of my XS650 line up in my Motor Bike Collection.

Thanks azman857 next week it will be send from Cedar Rapids Iowa down to Long Beach California as part of its long trip to Australia.

Stock 78 XS650E Rescued from a garage where it had sat since 1985. (Still had the licence plate & tag) New tires, tore the front end apart and geased, lubed all cables, found an original seat on epay. Did go with some cruiser-style mirrors as the stock ones clamped to the bars were just plain ugly. Still tinkering with the carbs. It's running on a set from another bike. The originals have a low speed issue I'm having trouble with.

Nice Bike

Picked this up 2 weeks ago from a lady DC detective, hence the robin egg blue paintjob. Have been removing surface corrosion, lubricating, and checking things out. Plan on leaving it in this configuration, but will add a few parts (slimline tail and turn signal lights, nicer fork ears, bar end mirrors) and repaint to another (more manly!) color, perhaps black. It's a '77 (supposedly).

Standing on my head looking at it, it appears to be a pretty nice bike. I believe the seat was adapted from a Special.

Hey Jake Horton, Those seat springs are the best thing i did with the bike, the roads over in NZ are pretty crap and they take out the bumps! No slopyness at all!

Nice score rick! It looks like a'77,also looks like the gauges have been changed out. Definately needs paint though ,black always looks good.

kt650,
just checked my matching frame/engine ID# against a file in this forum and the 447-721XXX does indicate that it's a '77. I agree with your color choice of black for the tank and side panels. If I decide to go all the way I may go for a Ferrari red frame as well. The bike does have aftermarket mini gauges, which I'll leave on, but the PO also gave me the original instrument cluster. Thanks for the feedback.

bluejean,
if it was me you were asking about the exhaust, they came with the bike so I'm not sure what type they are. However, they are about 28" long and as far as I can tell from the picture, look like these available on Mike's:

"Dunstall" style replica Universal 27 3/4" motorcycle muffler reverse cone

They sound great. From the patina on the head pipes, those appear to be stock.

Rick

As noted, I've been degreasing and de-corroding the bike from back to front, as well as removing flat black paint off the headers and fuel cap. Next up is the front end and engine. Here's a current look (hopefully right side up just like in the iPhone).

The paint, while not my color choice, was professionally done so is a perfectly smooth base from which to embark. the black "yamaha" and "the salt life" emblems are peel off vinyl, which will disappear shortly.

The seat was from a special, and now that the lower chrome trim plates have been removed, the lines no longer clash with the rest of the bike.

Just kind of got this one done. Stock '78 that someone had done a hack street tracker job on. Got rid of the plastic tank & bodywork, finished cleaning up the frame, complete re-wire, LED lights, rattle can paint. Little bit of finishing like mirrors, tank decal or something, mini front fender?
