removing powdercoating

found 1 thread on removal of powdercoating.said to carefully use a propane torch to remove the coating and then sand(in big letters,not garnet walnut etc???) blast any patchs left.before i get the torch out and wreck something,anybody tried this or got a different method that doesnt take forever with just the sandblaster (used garnet on a small patch)
 
I used to work at an industrial coating shop and if we had parts come in that were already coated we always burned it off in an oven and then sandblasted. The only other thing you could try is to soften it using MEK thinner first.
 
Best bet is to scuff it down with heavy grit sand paper by hand, I use 80 grit for this, then use aircraft paint stripper. Lay it on heavy and wait a few minutes, should boil the powder right off...get a plastic scraper like a bondo spreader and scrape off as much of the old coating as you can. Sometimes this takes two or three applications of stripper. That will leave the part pretty clean. Rinse thoroughly with water to neutralize the leftover stripper and either finish sand by hand or I use the blast cabinet with 70 grit aluminum oxide to take off the remaining bits.

What are you trying to take it off off=? Best way is if you can get it in a sand blaster do that. PC is tough shit.
 
thanks for the info.its not for all me but also for a old bloke that had to give up bikes etc after a stroke.hes now playing around with ride on mowers and 1 of the restoration jobs is repainting the engine bonnets etc for which he wants to remove the p.coating (bloody perfectionests).... any aussies.....mek is that avalible in oz and is there a brand name? may need it or other above ideas as thinking about buying one of the cheap powdercoating kits and will no doult stuff up a couple of first attempts

Ditto, you've got to burn it first. That's why I love enamel.

First post here :) not much of a poster, more a lurker (geez that sounds creepy)

Anyway Flea I'm in Sydney, I've used this stuff:

You can get it from Repco and I think Supercheap as well. Spray it on, leave it for 15 then scrape it off. Repeat for stubborn coatings. Works real well!

a friend of mine had his wheels coated at different times. Well what do you know?!They didn't match. he used a wire wheel on a grinder. hell of a mess, but it worked.
