I've been window licking,,

Tax/mot all up to date and it goes like stink, so tomorrow I may just go for a bimble.
count the sprockets, interested in how it's geared.. my 74TXA was running 17/31 got it good and warm one day and cranked it up on a long straight didn't get serious about running it out until 3rd gear when I took it up to 7K redline and 4th redline 5th gear chickened out at 6500 speedo was reading 110mph and it was flying

How does it sound with those 27"Dunstal replicas? I've been curious about that. I liked them on my 850 Commando.

Yep, nice find! Love them tank graphics...must've been specific to you island folk as we don't see them across the pond. I believe that seat is the apex for the Specials too. They should have stopped right there for all future production. Congrats and welcome aboard.

Cheers chaps, I'll have a proper mooch round it over the weekend. It sounds awesome, don't know about the pipes other than they were new about 05 ish, still look fantastic. As for the gearing, again don't know, but it really goes well.
Now I know nothing about these things other than what I've read, but the chap I got it from had another before this, a slightly older one. This was registered new in the UK and had mag wheels and lower bars, whereas this one was imported from the States, hence the spokes and chopper bars ?
If you don't mind, I'll ask loads of questions here before I start a build thread, well it won't really need a build as its sooo good, absolutely no rot anywhere. It can all be done in stages, who knows what's down the line. Looking at it this morning, it just needs to be made to look lighter to me. So maybe a bit of a caf job ?
One thing smashing me in the face is the front disc, it needs to be on the other side.

Are the spokes desirable

I reckon you lads overt water would say you were stoked, over here its more like chuffed ter fuck.
Hehe gushing like a 16 yr old again. Bloody motor bikes eh :)

Hang on to those spokies mate, they are hen's teeth over here!!

If you cafe it, at least you will be able to back up to stock if need be!!

Those wheels a doubly rare. The 79 Special II was the only year the 19/16 wheel combination come out with alloy rims instead of chrome steel.

Seen a set sell for $500 in the US

I've been flicking through some old paperwork that came in the file. The chap who imported it kept handwritten notes of stuff he bought and from where etc. Can't see where it came from originally but he's got it down as a Special II SF[2fo].
There's stuff for all sorts, nut and bolt resto, new clutch, Boyer ignition, rings and de-coke, new starter drive gears, re-chrome muddys, its had a Halco 2-1 at some point, the little Halco brochure from 1997 is here, even notes when the wheels were rebuilt and polished, not long ago by the look of them :D
The chap I bought it off wanted to keep the reg plate for some reason to put on his new bike and has been battling with DVLA over the new reg for my bike. It was on a T which is 1978 over here and correct for the manufacture year [ex= ABC123T]. But the bellends at DVLA now want to put it on an R which is 1998, the year it was imported [ex= R123ABC].
I'd like a proper age related plate, so who would I ask for conformation of year manufacture, Yamaha UK ?

I think I'm going slightly geeky :wtf:

650Skulls' ID chart will help you here PDF first post http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30569 find your serial number (in range) and that will nail down the model/year there are several other threads with similar info if you want to cross check

Welcome to the forum. Looks and sounds like the type of find we all hope for, good work. Even if you try some mags keep the spokes. Here in Canada it's the same, lots of mags around not many spokes. I too am curious about the Commando pipe sound and I like the tank graphics too.
If you're like many of us once you ride it you will be completely hooked, there may be no way out.

Well then, the XS has been sat in the lab awaiting some love and attention while I finished the Superdream,

Just needs the seat sorting near the tank.

I got the XS legal and run it for a week, was sat on the back step at work having a brew admiring it in the sun and a bloke walked over and offered me a sum I couldn't refuse so its gone.

But,, I've now got this one,

Much better nick than the other one, one owner for 20 years. I'm going to do a bit of a tracker jobby with paint like me old Black Dream Tuono, them wheels are crying out for bright gold :D

LOVE the Honda! Which engine is that?

That's the second 650 I've seen with the bare mag wheels (no paint, or silver paint) and I really like the look. I think I'm going to dig my spare set of mags out of the back of the shop and do that this winter.

Ey up, can anyone tell me if the tank on my new bike is the smaller one, might be talking shite here but I'm thinking there is a big un and a little un ?
