I've read the directions and some threads. Unifilter says you need to oil them or whatever before you use them for the first time. What all do you guys use/recommend?

I just use plain motor oil. The special foam filter oil is for the green foam filters they make. That foam is more porous and coarse. I bought a bottle of the cheapest straight 30wt. they had over at Walmart (their in-house brand) to use just for this.

It doesn't have to be two stroke oil. I just use plain motor oil. That's all that link calls for. It doesn't mention two stroke oil specifically, just plain motor oil.

Twin's is right, and I was TOTALLY wrong. OPP'S. Look at the site Twin's posted, it say's motor oil. Now, I ASSUMED they ment 2 stroke, my bad. Use the Rotella.

Seems like we re-hash this every year or so. I wish UNI would be a little more forth-coming. One of us should probably contact them for definitive answers.

It just says motor oil. That could be 0W or 60W, they don't say, but it's sure going to make a difference in how the filter works.

Then there's "petrol." That's Australian for "gas," right? Why would you want to put gas, with a hundred different weird additives in it on your filter? I use kerosene.

And for the oil, I use 30W chain and bar oil. I think I got that idea from gggGary in one of the previous threads on this subject. The idea being that it will last on the filter longer because it is sticky, and dirt in the air will stick to it better.

So, that's what I do, 50/50 kerosene and 30W bar oil. And I brush it on with a dedicated oiling brush -- I got that idea from 5twins. But, really, someone should be a hero and contact UNI and get a definitive answer on this.

As far as the fineness of the filter.

I believe the PPI stands for Pores Per Inch.

UNI AIR FILTER - FOAM SHEETS
Sheets of Air Filter Foam for you to fabricate your own design! There are five types to choose from.

(Click on the picture to enlarge)
BF-1 - 12" X 16" X 5/8" - 65 PPI Green fine foam
BF-2 - 12” X 24” X 3/8" - 30 PPI Black coarse foam
BF-3 - 8" X 10" X 2" - 30 PPI Black coarse foam / Skid plate
BF-4 - 12 "X 16" X 3/8" - 60 PPI Black fine foam
BF-5 - 12" X 16" X 3/8" - 40 PPI Red coarse foam
BF-6 - 12" X 16" X 5/8" - 40/60 PPI Dual Layer

So color is not an absolute guide to PPI

I have "refiltered" a couple of stock filter frames with the green sheet
BF-1 - 12" X 16" X 5/8" - 65 PPI Green fine foam
(anyone from Milwaukee remember the "green sheet"?)

But just ordered 2 of the fine black sheet (from Amazon)
BF-4 - 12 "X 16" X 3/8" - 60 PPI Black fine foam
because it's thinner, 3/8", the 5/8" green seems a bit too thick for a street bike and is kind of hard to fit to the filter frame. I have to come up with a good way to glue or heat press the edges together so the foam loop can be simply removed for cleaning.

I don't think it matters much what you use. I've used all kinds of stuff, pretty much whatever is laying around. The only thing that hasn't worked is the thick air filter oil that's used on dirt bikes.

Lately, I've been using a kerosene/gear-oil mix. It's what came out of my horizontal mill after flushing the gear box with kerosene.
