Dipstick boke; part is "down there"

Yeah pull the other cover, then if you don't see it, fuggettaboudit. I've pulled down engines with good dipsticks and found a broken off end in the bottom where it had peacefully lain for years, decades maybe. It IS easy to get it in slightly the wrong place, done it a few times but stopped shoving before breaking it off......

Thanks gary for the morning laugh...
There is two holes there, lol, I could deffinately see a well intending friend shoving the stick in the far right hole..
There was a thred some time ago, when 650 rider was still up, might have even been there, idk, but it did get in the gearing.
If it were up to me, ide leave it, but im lazy. are you lazy? are you willing to let your tranny, lol, chew on the end of the stick?

Since you will be under that right cover, there are usually a couple of things that need addressing. First is the grinding starter fix. Most need this. Second would be installing heavy duty clutch springs. I've found most need this as well.

God this is not a good thread to read when your mind is in the wrong place. Or maybe it is because its hilarious.

Same thing happened to mine, dipstick broke in exactly the same place, luckly I was able to use one of those little neodymium magnets duck taped to a thin metal rod to fish it out. Those little magnets are pretty bloody powerful, and I was surprised it worked, I couldn't see the broken end but thought it was worth a try before I tore the engine down (which is what I plan to do anyway)

Thanks for the story. Do you remember if you knew right away that it had snapped because of the feel or sound? There's the chamber the stick is supposed to go down, let's call it "to the left" and it's possible to insert it more to the right, although that would be quite a bend. Do you recall where your magnet found the broken end? Maybe I can fish around more before opening up the right side cover.

It was on the RIGHT side. I did the same thing as you and thought it might have snapped and settled on the LEFT, I pulled the starter motor out and had a fish around in there first before pulling the left cover off. In the end I didn't bother pulling starter motor cover off as I was satisfied it wasn't in there. (I think if it was in there, it wouldn't have snapped in the first place, if you know what I mean... the left side is where its suppose to be)

And to answer your first question no, I didn't feel or hear anything different when tightening down the dipstick, I obviously put it in the wrong hole (right side) and just screwed it down, it felt as if it was going into the right hole. I've read that this happens a fair bit, I did a lot of searching like you when it first happened to try and figure out the best way of retrieving it. In the end I tried the old magnet trick and got lucky I guess. Have another go with the magnet probe, and try focus more towards the right.

Needless to say I'm a lot more careful now! Let me know how you go. Good luck!

I got my gasket set in the mail today and am getting ready to put the starter gear case cover back on. The spacer and "wavy washer" came off without me noticing which goes on first. Is it cover / spacer / washer / gear as shown in my photo?

Or does the curvy washer go between the cover and the spacer?

I bought one of my XS2s from a guy who said the bike was spitting oil . Sure enough when I ran / rode it spit oil out of the breather tubes .
I checked the oil and found that the tip just like yours was broke off . He ( previous owner ) filled the oil up to the broken dip stick . I drained the oil and it was over filled considerably..... Hence the spitting oil . Anyway I still have the bike and I never thought to look for the tip . I'm not sure if it fell off in the engine either . It runs great .
I've since replaced the dip stick . Makes me wonder ??

If I had to bet on it, I'm guessing that I won't find anything on the right side.

This is what I'm thinking...but I think I'll try pulling the right cover off...I have the replacement gasket now, so why not "learn a little more".

As I mentioned earlier, there are most likely other things that need doing under that cover anyway. Also check to see that the tach drive rod is not missing its shim washer at the bottom, #8 below .....

If the cable is leaking where it connects to the cover, now's the time to replace the o-ring and little oil seal (#2 and #3).

Yes, I have in mind what you mentioned. And thanks for the reminder on that cable.

Question: Should the kick starter slide off after removing the bolt which I've done? It seems it's stuck on there pretty good.

Usually I tap a flat blade screw driver in the slot to spread it a bit and then it comes right off. Hit it with rust buster too. Same thing for shift and brake levers.

Yes, you need to spread it a bit. It's been clamped tight on there for God only knows how long.

Flat blade is what I started to do, but I thought I'd better check thinking maybe I was missing something simple. Thanks!

Well...got the right side cover off fine...looked high and low, front and back...and nada...no sign of broken end of dip stick anywhere. That's it, done looking for it.

Thanks for all the help provided here.
