Hello,
First off I'd like to say that I am a new member and I appreciate any and all advice. Forums like these are so helpful to those like me who become frustrated with symptoms like no starts that cause us not to be on the road riding.

So here is my problem. I have an 81 xs650 that is fighting me to start. I had an issue with my coil. I had the xs performance high output coil that the connectors broke off the back. So I ordered a new coil the nice green one from xs 650 performance. Still didn't start. Well I have the ignition unit black box that I still think is the problem. But I read some more forums and they talked about replacing the 4 diodes that are known to go bad. Still no start. I found out that I had two 6 pin connectors switched. I switched them back and kicked it over and it started. I turned it off from my kill switch that powers my modules and went to restart it10 minutes later and nothing. Definitely not getting any spark. Not sure what else to try.

Well it's a kick only due to being bobbed. It ran great last summer and I tore it apart over the winter. When I kick it it just had the sound of no spark. When I test the voltage of the coil the red wire has12v and the Orange wire has7.

also im not sure if my black box is considered a CDI or a TCI. its a 81 with electronic ignition. and i know the coils can be finiky about which system they are paired with. im just so in over my head with the electronics. wiring is not my strong point at all.

Yup all grounds are clean and tight and currently I don't have the battery in it but it hooked up to the charger so I can read voltage instead of killing my battery all the time.

On your ignition it is a TCI, how on the coil it needs a 2.5 ohm primary to work with the TCI.
You checked the voltage on the coil and have 12 volts to it. The other wire voltage don't really matter. That wire grounds the coil. so as the engine turns and the TCI box grounds and ungrounds that wire the voltage changes from near zero to near battery voltage.
On the TCI box. It needs battery voltage on the red/white wire too. Good ground on the black wire.
It gets signals from the pickups on the stator. This signals tell the TCI when to fire. In your repair manual is a trouble shooting guide that tells how to test these pickups.

Dude Leo thank you so much I'm going to try and run some test tomorrow and see what I can come with. Also does anybody have any links to the test from the book. I lost mine and haven't gotten another one.
Another thing too how would I go about testing the pick up coil to know. If I'm getting proper signal.
